A weekly note from Rep. Ciscomani.

It was another productive week in AZ06 during the October District Work Period! From hosting a roundtable on the fentanyl epidemic with Rep. Ashley Hinson (IA-02) to recognizing Mayor Micah Powell at the Eloy Chamber of Commerce Luncheon, it was a busy week!

Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions Leader of the Month.

As your Representative, and a member of the Conservative Climate Caucus, I am committed to supporting common sense solutions that promote clean and affordable energy for Americans. I am honored to be named November’s CRESponsible leader by Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions (CRES) for my work advocating for pragmatic energy solutions.

I signed on to a letter to House Republican Leadership urging them to continue clean energy tax incentives and I introduced the Critical Mineral Consistency Act (H.R. 8446) to end our reliance on foreign adversaries for critical minerals and materials and onshore America’s mineral supply chain. Additionally, I voted in favor of the Unlocking our Domestic Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) Act (H.R. 7176) to promote American energy independence and expand the LNG market and co-sponsored a resolution to recognize National Clean Energy Week.  Thank you for this incredible honor!

Hosted a Roundtable on the Fentanyl Epidemic.

I hosted a Fentanyl Roundtable with Congresswoman Ashley Hinson (IA-02) to hear from those affected and discuss how Congress can continue to work to make a lasting impact combating this crisis. We heard heart-wrenching stories from families who lost loved ones to this epidemic and spoke with Sierra Vista Police Chief Chris Hiser, and community leaders and healthcare experts from Graham, Greenlee, Cochise, and Pima Counties. The stakes could not be clearer, Congress must come together to secure the border, implement stronger prevention efforts, and expand access to care and resources for those battling addiction. I am grateful to Rep. Hinson for sharing her perspective from Iowa and for the leaders from all across our district for joining us.

Dedication of the Border Operations Center Building.

I was proud to speak at the dedication ceremony of the new Border Operations Center Building and pay tribute to the Oletski Brothers, two law enforcement officers who were injured in the line of duty. This 37,000-square-foot facility in West Sierra Vista will house over 80 state, local, and federal employees. It is designed to integrate law enforcement entities and has been a model for better joint interoperability, particularly on the border. In line with this initiative, I’ve championed several border-related bills such as H.R. 5990, the BEST Facilitation Act, and H.R. 3602, the End the Border Catastrophe Act. This dedication ceremony was a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of Chris, a Sheriff’s Deputy, and Josh, a Customs and Border Protection Agent.

Eloy Chamber of Commerce Luncheon.

I had the honor of speaking at the Eloy Chamber of Commerce Luncheon to recognize Mayor Micah Powell for all his work pushing Eloy forward. We celebrated exciting developments such as new businesses, improved healthcare infrastructure, and the adoption of electric vehicles and their supporting industries. I worked closely with the city to secure $1 million for the Frontier Street Mill and Overlay Project, aimed at boosting economic vitality and enhancing safety in Eloy. Lastly, I presented a Certificate of Special Recognition to Mayor Micah Powell, who is retiring, for his dedication and leadership. It was a proud moment to highlight how the collaborative efforts between Federal and local partners can have a positive impact on our communities.

Cosponsored the FARM Act.

I am proud to cosponsor the Farmer Assistance and Revenue Mitigation Act (FARM) Act (H.R.10045), which directs the Secretary of Agriculture to provide emergency assistance to agricultural producers. This crucial support aims to mitigate high input costs and low commodity prices during crop year 2024. By offering this aid, we can ensure that our agricultural producers have the resources they need to thrive. This legislation is a vital step in supporting our farming communities. Together, we can strengthen our agricultural sector and promote economic stability.

Veterans & Military Families Month.

November marks the start of National Veterans and Military Families Month, a time to recognize the significant role military families play in our national defense and to support veterans as they transition back to civilian life. In Congress, I have the honor of representing over 70,000 brave veterans from Arizona’s 6th Congressional District. As a member of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I have introduced ten pieces of veterans-focused legislation, such as the VET-TEC Authorization Act (H.R. 1669) and the VETS Opportunity Act (H.R. 7896), to provide job training and educational opportunities. My commitment to supporting our servicemembers, their families, and veterans is unwavering. Together, we can ensure they receive the recognition and resources they deserve.

Profiles of the American Dream.

Like many Grand Canyon State residents, the small group of people who’ve served as president of the University of Arizona have come from places far and wide. We’ve had a few from Ohio, New York and Illinois. Others hailed from Maine, Michigan and a handful of other states.

Among the immigrants who’ve presided over our state’s first university, one was born in Canada and another in Austria. Suresh Garimella is the first from Asia.
President Garimella became UA’s 23rd president on October 1 and his journey to Old Main exemplifies the American Dream.

He was born in southeastern India, in a village so tiny that its Wikipedia page entry consists of a single sentence. His humble origins are proof that it’s not where you start, it’s where you end up that matters.

President Garimella comes to Tucson from the University of Vermont, where he served as that institution’s 27th president since 2019. Neither of his parents had college degrees but he grew up in a home that stressed the importance of education.

“At the time I was growing up in India, education was the ticket,” he once told an interviewer. “We don’t come from a family with means. A way to succeed was to study hard.”

And that he certainly did. He is a mechanical engineer by training and a highly regarded researcher. He has a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, an M.S. from The Ohio State University, and a bachelor’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology. From 1999 to 2019, he was a faculty member at Purdue.

“I was happy to be a researcher and an educator," he said. “I didn’t apply for most things I have done, and I’ve not regretted any of them. I’ve had experience in government, I’ve had experience in university administration and research. I also serve on a private sector board. I serve on the board of Sandia National Labs. I feel blessed about the broad range of opportunities that I’ve had, because each informs the other and enriches the other. “
