A weekly note from Rep. Ciscomani.

From meeting with leaders of the Navajo Nation to passing my latest piece of bipartisan legislation through the U.S. House of Representatives, it was a productive week back in Washington after the district work period!

Honored and Privileged to Represent You in Congress for a Second Term.

I want to begin by thanking you for trusting me with another two years representing AZ-06. I look forward to continuing to push our district, and our country, forward. It is an honor to represent you.

Ensuring Our Veterans Are Laid to Rest with Dignity.

Last week, I spoke at a House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs (DAMA) hearing to provide oversight on the operation of National Cemeteries for our veterans. AZ-06 is home to  two federally funded cemeteries – the Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetary in Sierra Vista and the Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Marana – so this issue is incredibly important for our district.

Through our oversight, we honor those who fought and made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and ensure grieving families can lay their loved ones to rest with dignity. With over 70,000 veterans in my district, including many retirees, my office frequently receives inquiries regarding memorial services. I remain committed to ensuring taxpayer dollars are responsibly spent on memorials that honor the life, legacy, and service of our nation’s heroes.

Securing Water Rights for Arizona’s Tribes.

I met with the leaders of the Navajo Nation and President Nygren to discuss my bill, the Northeastern Arizona Indian Water Rights Settlement Agreement (H.R. 8940), which will ensure the Navajo Nation, the Hopi Tribe, and the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe have a reliable supply of water, provide for enhanced infrastructure in the region, and allow Arizona to better plan for a secure water future. This important step forward reflects our commitment to working together for a sustainable and equitable water future.

Passing Another Critical Piece of Legislation.

I'm thrilled to announce that my bill, H.R. 8446, the Critical Mineral Consistency Act, has passed the House with bipartisan support! This legislation will ensure the U.S. Geological Survey incorporates critical materials identified by the Department of Energy into the USGS’ Critical Minerals List, addressing a key discrepancy that has confused mineral producers. By creating consistency within our agencies, we are taking a significant step towards securing our domestic supply chain and supporting our national security and clean energy economy. This bill is a testament to our commitment to onshore mineral production and reduce reliance on foreign imports. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to support this common-sense legislation. This is my fifth bill to have passed the House this Congress, all with bipartisan support!

Sending Holiday Wishes to our Deployed Troops.

My team and I attended the Holiday Mail for Heroes event to show our support for deployed troops during the holiday season. The Holiday Season can be difficult for our servicemembers deployed overseas. Since 2007, this program has allowed Americans to extend holiday greetings, gratitude, and well wishes to service members around the world. The Red Cross has distributed thousands of cards to these brave men and women. During this season of hope and giving, it's important for us to express our appreciation for their sacrifices. We were honored to participate and encourage everyone to join in thanking our armed forces.

In the news.

US House Passes Critical Mineral Consistency Act of 2024
Mining Engineering Magazine
“Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema and Republican Senator Mike Lee (Utah) introduced the Senate companion to the Critical Mineral Consistency Act. This bill aims to ensure consistency between the two lists and streamline the permitting process for vital mining projects. The House version was introduced by Republican Representative Juan Ciscomani (AZ-06).”

“Murphy talked about his experience on the Veterans Affairs Council, established last year by Representative Juan Ciscomani to address pressing issues facing veterans in the district.  Mayor Murphy stated he will be working closely with Ciscomani in the upcoming year to tackle veteran homelessness and suicide.”

Rep. Ciscomani discusses priorities for his second term

Ciscomani is currently back in Washington. I talked with him over Zoom this afternoon from his office on Capitol Hill. The congressman says his first priority will be working on passing new border security laws, which could include a bill he helped push last year that made it through the House, but was never taken up in the Senate.

Profiles of the American Dream.

This week we’re climbing into the Way Back Machine and charting a course for the late summer of 1974.

The big news nationally was the resignation of President Richard Nixon. But over in Graham County, Arizona, it was the resignation of Dr. Darrell Cluff from the governing board of Eastern Arizona College that was making headlines.

Gerald Ford took over for Nixon. Ric Mattice took over for Cluff. Ford lasted two years. Mattice is still at it.

In what could well be a record for an elected official in Arizona, Ric in September marked his 50th anniversary on the college governing board. Let that sink in. He’s been helping guide the oldest community college in Arizona for a half century.

Community colleges are a gateway to the American Dream for millions of higher education students across the country. Ric’s dedication to that mission is itself a testament to how we all can play a part in making the American Dream a reality.

“It has been a privilege to serve EAC and our community for 50 years,” Ric recently told the Eastern Arizona Courier. “We live in an area that understands the importance of higher education, and it means a lot to know EAC will be here for years to come.”

Thank you, Ric, and congratulations. Your service to our community is an inspiration.
