Funding our Military.

As Representative to a district with two major military installations – Fort Huachuca and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base – I will always support our military, servicemembers and their families. This is why I was so proud to vote in favor of the Servicemember Quality of Life Improvement and National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2025 (H.R.5009), which passed the House with bipartisan support.

This key piece of legislation authorizes full funding for our military, includes a 14.5% pay raise for junior service members, a general 4.5% pay increase, and improves the quality-of-life for our troops and their families. The safety and security of our nation remains a top priority and this year’s NDAA ensures our Armed Forces have the resources they need to carry out their critical mission – defending our country and keeping the American people safe. Moreover, I was glad to see the package included my provision to transfer 203 acres of Army land to the city of Sierra Vista to increase capabilities for the municipal airport and support Fort Huachuca’s critical missions.

Wreaths Across America.

Attending Wreaths Across America at the Arizona State Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Marana with my family was deeply moving. The event beautifully honored our veterans and servicemembers by placing wreaths on their graves, reminding us of the ultimate sacrifice they made in service to their fellow Americans. It was heartening to see the community come together to show their respect and gratitude. Sharing this moment with my family was truly moving. I appreciate the Wreaths Across America organization for organizing such a meaningful tribute each year.

Strengthening Water Infrastructure.

Southern Arizona leads the way in water conservation, and as your Representative, I will continue to champion commonsense solutions that promote a more secure water future for our district, state, and nation.

I proudly voted for the Thomas R. Carper Water Resources Development Act (S.4367). This bill includes my provisions to enhance AZ-06 infrastructure, improve flood mitigation in Pinal County and Sahuarita, invest in Tucson's new water reclamation facility, and bolster the Western Rural Water program. This bill has now passed both the House and the Senate and I urge the President to sign it into law!

As part of this legislative package, I was proud to secure:

  • A $50 million dollar increase in authorization of funding for the Western Rural Water Program, a key program that funds essential water projects in Arizona.
  • Authorization for the City of Tucson Southlands Recycled Water Loop: This project will allow the city to create a new reclaimed water facility and help reduce the cities reliance on groundwater and Colorado River Water.
  • Expedited construction for flood control project construction in Pinal County at the Lower Santa Cruz River.
  • Authorization for the Town of Sahuarita for Drainage Improvements to help them combat flooding issues.

Eastern College Basketball at The Capitol.

I was thrilled to welcome the Eastern Arizona College Men’s Basketball Team to the US Capitol as they traveled across the US to play two away games in Maryland. The Gila Monsters have had an incredible season with a record of 11-1 and an undefeated road record of 5-0. They arrived on the East Coast riding an 8-game winning streak, ready to take on Allegany College of Maryland, a game they won easily!

During their trip, my staff gave them a tour of the US Capitol building, and I was pleased to take time to speak with them. It's always great to welcome constituents to Washington and I encourage you to come visit! If you or someone you know is traveling to Washington and would like to tour the Capitol, please don't hesitate to reach out to my office at 202-225-2542 or request a ticket here.

Working for a Sustainable Water Future.

Water is our most precious resource, and as your Representative, I am committed to pushing initiatives that strengthen water infrastructure, expand access to a clean and reliable supply, and promote a more secure water future for our state.

As part of this work, I had a great discussion with Yavapai-Apache Tribe Chairwoman Tanya Lewis to discuss my legislation to ratify the Northeastern Arizona Indian Water Rights Settlement Agreement (H.R. 8940), the largest water settlement in Arizona’s history. This vital legislation invests in water infrastructure in the region to ensure a reliable supply of water to the Navajo Nation, Hopi Tribe, and San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe of Arizona. We explored how these funds would be allocated, focusing on critical initiatives like building new pipelines, upgrading existing facilities, and addressing long-standing water quality issues. This agreement is a crucial step toward ensuring the sustainability and well-being of these Tribes and opens up opportunities for economic development and improved quality of life for these communities.

Boys & Girls Club Shopping Spree.

Attending the Boys & Girls Club of AZ Annual Shopping Spree was an incredible experience. Seeing the joy on the kids' faces as they picked out their favorite items was heartwarming. The event highlighted the importance of community and the impact it can have on the lives of our youth. I am especially grateful to Tucson Electric Power for their generous support and dedication to our community, and to the Boys & Girls Club of AZ for hosting this event and all the invaluable work you do preparing and fostering the leaders and innovators of tomorrow!

Now Hiring: Green & Gold Congressional Aide.

My office is looking to hire a Green & Gold Congressional Aide for a two-year paid position in my Tucson district office. This role involves attending local meetings and events on my behalf and acting as a facilitator between veteran constituents and federal, state, and local agencies. The Green & Gold Congressional Aide program was established to create employment opportunities for Veterans, Gold Star families, and Active-Duty Spouses within the U.S. House of Representatives. These positions provide participants with the experience and exposure necessary to broaden their career opportunities and assist other Veterans as constituent service representatives.

The program is limited to Veterans and Gold Star Families who meet specific requirements: Veterans must be honorably discharged, released from active duty within the last six years, with terminal pay grades at or below E-5, O-3, or W-2. Veterans promoted to the pay grades of E-6, O-4, and W-3 within six months of separation from active duty are eligible, provided they meet all other eligibility criteria. Veterans who have received a 20-year or Temporary Early Retirement Authorization (TERA) retirement are not eligible. Gold Star applicants must be the spouse, parent/step-parent, sibling/step-sibling, child, or step-child of a service member who died in the line of duty or from a service-connected disability. Active-duty spouses must be married to a service member serving on active duty in a regular component of the armed forces.

Profiles of the American Dream.

The story is a familiar one but always inspirational.

Someone comes to America to start a new life. They aren’t afraid of hard work or long hours. They open a restaurant and give it their all. Word spreads. The business takes off.

Time and again, immigrants have found the American Dream in the same places we go to for a meal.

Or, in the case of Ruby Tran, it’s the place to go in Cochise County for bubble tea or Asian treats.

Ruby is an immigrant from Vietnam and mother of two. She opened Sakura in 2022 and just recently was honored by the Sierra Vista City Council as the Minority-Owned Business of the Year.

“Sakura offers unique Asian food and snacks not available anywhere else locally,” the city noted in its announcement of the award. “It received multiple nominations and was lauded for having the best boba in Sierra Vista, exceptional customer service, and an owner who expanded residents’ horizons by engaging them on their tastes and introducing them to new Asian flavors.”

Congrats, Ruby! Keep up the good work.
