Hitting the Ground Running to Secure the Border.

After four years of chaos, my number one priority is to secure the southern border and protect our communities.

Last week, I co-sponsored and voted in favor of the Laken Riley Act (H.R. 29), which passed the House with bipartisan support. This bill honors the memory of Laken, a 22-year-old nursing student tragically murdered by an illegal migrant and ensures that bad actors here illegally are detained to prevent any more innocent lives from being lost to the border crisis.

On the first day of the 119th Congress, I reintroduced the Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act (H.R. 35), which cracks down. on high-speed car chases along the border and makes sure that any bad actor who endangers our community is held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. Specifically, this bill, which is named after Agent Raul Gonzalez who was killed during a high-speed car chase in 2022, makes failure to yield a federal crime and imposes a life sentence if anyone is killed during the apprehension.

Additionally, I partnered with Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) to introduce the Transnational Criminal Organization Illicit Spotter Prevention and Elimination Act (H.R. 263) to increase punishment on individuals who aid and abet cartel operations along the southern border. Commonly known as “spotters” these individuals monitor parts of the southern border and report the positions of law enforcement personnel to help cartels evade capture.

And that’s just the start. I will continue to push efforts that tackle the crisis at the border and protect our residents and law enforcement officers. Keep up with all my legislative efforts in Congress here!

DOLE Act Signed Into Law.

I am extremely proud that my bill, the Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act (S. 141) was recently signed into law! The flagship veterans package of the 118th Congress, this bill delivers for our veterans by reforming and modernizing the VA, streamlining the delivery of benefits and care, whether at the VA or at home, expanding access to job training and employment opportunities, promoting access to housing for homeless veterans, and supporting veteran’s families and caregivers.

I am grateful to Chairman Bost and all the veteran-serving organizations and stakeholders for their work getting this much-needed bill across the finish line, and I look forward to continuing to work with the Committee and the incoming administration to continue delivering for our veterans, their caregivers, and families.

Standing With Our Ally Israel.

I voted for the Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act (H.R. 23), to hold the International Criminal Court (ICC) accountable for its baseless attack against Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Specifically, this bill imposes sanctions against any person or entity who assist the ICC in detaining, arresting, or prosecuting U.S. individuals or our allies and rescinds current and future appropriations to the ICC. The United States government must continue to stand firmly with our ally Israel.

Arizona Delegation Breakfast.

I have always said, I am willing to work with anyone, from either side of the aisle, to find commonsense solutions to the issues affecting our district, state, and nation. I thoroughly enjoyed a productive conversation with my Arizona colleagues about our priorities in Congress. Despite our policy differences, it’s important that we find common ground to fight for Arizona’s interests at the national level, specifically on critical issues like water, infrastructure, and our Southern border.

Now Hiring: Green & Gold Congressional Aide.

My office is looking to hire a Green & Gold Congressional Aide for a two-year paid position in my Tucson district office. This role involves attending local meetings and events on my behalf and acting as a facilitator between veteran constituents and federal, state, and local agencies. The Green & Gold Congressional Aide program was established to create employment opportunities for Veterans, Gold Star families, and Active-Duty Spouses within the U.S. House of Representatives. These positions provide participants with the experience and exposure necessary to broaden their career opportunities and assist other Veterans as constituent service representatives.

The program is limited to Veterans and Gold Star Families who meet specific requirements: Veterans must be honorably discharged, released from active duty within the last six years, with terminal pay grades at or below E-5, O-3, or W-2. Veterans promoted to the pay grades of E-6, O-4, and W-3 within six months of separation from active duty are eligible, provided they meet all other eligibility criteria. Veterans who have received a 20-year or Temporary Early Retirement Authorization (TERA) retirement are not eligible. Gold Star applicants must be the spouse, parent/step-parent, sibling/step-sibling, child, or step-child of a service member who died in the line of duty or from a service-connected disability. Active-duty spouses must be married to a service member serving on active duty in a regular component of the armed forces.

Profiles of the American Dream.

Eloy ushered in a new era of civic leadership a few weeks ago with a changing of the guard at City Hall.

Micah Powell recently returned to life as a private citizen after a dozen years of public service – eight as a councilmember and another four as mayor.

“I did this job with compassion, conviction and love, and I did it with my heart,” he said at his last council meeting on November 25.

Andrew Sutton is the city’s new mayor, assuming the top job after about a year and a half on the council. He’s a transplanted New Yorker who has set for himself a worthy objective.

“Ultimately,” he told the Casa Grande Dispatch, “my goal is to leave the city better than I found it.”

The mayor of Eloy earns $1,000 a month, so it’s pretty clear that people like Micah and Andrew aren’t in it for the money. They got involved in local government because they care about their community and they want to help shape its future. They each are great examples of the American Dream.
