Government Shutdown Avoided.

I voted for H.R. 1968, Full Year Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2025, which passed the House of Representatives, the Senate, and was signed into law by President Trump, averting a government shutdown. While funding the government through a continuing resolution (CR) is not my first choice, this bill accomplished the goal of keeping the government open and prevented a disruption in critical services my constituents need.

By voting in favor of the CR, I supported:

✅ Fully funding our military and veterans' benefits
✅ Providing the largest pay raise for junior enlisted servicemembers in 40 years.
✅ Preventing disruptions in Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare payments.
✅ Ensuring federal workers are paid on time.
✅ Securing our southern border.

Largest Water Settlement Bill in Arizona History.

I am extremely proud to lead the largest water settlement legislation in the history of Arizona. My bill, the Northeastern Arizona Indian Water Rights Settlement Act (NAIWRSA) (H.R. 2025), will address one of the longest running water issues in Arizona by ratifying the historic Northeastern Arizona Indian Water Rights Settlement Agreement. This would secure water rights for the Navajo Nation, the Hopi Tribe, and the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe.

This agreement will ensure the Tribes have access to a clean and reliable water supply, provide the Navajo Nation and Hopi Tribe with new economic opportunities by allowing them to lease their water, and invests $5 billion to build and maintain critical water infrastructure in the region. Finally, the agreement also establishes a homeland for the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe. This not only gives much-needed certainty to the Tribes but also allows Arizona to better plan for a more secure water future.

I am proud to be leading a bipartisan group of fellow Arizona colleagues from the House of Representatives in this effort. Senators Mark Kelly (D-AZ) and Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) are leading a companion bill in the Senate. Learn more about this bill here.

Honoring our Veteran Servant Leaders.

As Representative of nearly 80,000 veterans, it is my sincere honor to host the Veteran Servant Leader Award to celebrate the veterans who exemplify leadership, dedication, and service, even after their time in uniform. Their continued service to our country and community is invaluable and exemplifies what it means to be a servant leader.

The deadline for submission for the 2025 Veteran Servant Leader Award is Tuesday, April 15, 2025. Any veteran who has received an honorable discharge and continues to make significant contributions to their community is eligible. Nominees must provide a DD214 form, a signed release form, a completed submission form, and a photo. You can apply for this award here.

The FLASH Act.

Under the previous administration, the historic number of border-crossings left behind hazardous trash piles which harm the environment of our federal lands. With a new administration in place, it’s time to clean up our federal lands and continue securing the border.

This is why I reintroduced the Federal Lands Amplified Security for the Homeland (FLASH) Act (H.R. 1820), which would direct federal managers to develop a strategy to address trash piles, allow states to place temporary barriers on federal lands, and enhance Border Patrol’s ability to do their job by constructing navigable roads along the southern border. You can read my guest opinion about this legislation here and listen to my testimony before the House Natural Resources Committee here.

Tucson Festival of Books.

Laura and I had a wonderful time attending the Tucson Festival of Books celebration at the University of Arizona. One of the largest book festivals in the country, it was great to see so many distinguished authors, local leaders, and amazing people gathered to celebrate and promote the power of storytelling and lifelong learning. To University of Arizona President Dr. Suresh Garimella, all the organizers, and everyone who worked to make this event happen, thank you for putting together such a successful event!

Profiles of the American Dream.

American Dream. American pastime. The two go together like a glove and a bat.
So, as another baseball season gets underway, we note the passing of local sports legend Cliff Myrick.

Standout player, winning coach, respected referee – Cliff did it all. He was, in the words of Arizona Daily Star sports columnist Greg Hansen, “One of the top baseball players in Tucson history.”

As a player, Cliff was part of Tucson High School’s championship teams of 1944, 1945 and 1946. He was good enough to attend a White Sox tryout camp in Chicago after graduation but decided to pursue his education instead. At the University of Arizona, he led the Wildcats in RBI in 1951.

As a coach, Cliff spent 27 years at Catalina High School, winning more than 300 games and leading the Trojans to the 1967 state baseball championship.

And as a high school football ref, Cliff officiated close to 500 games before he earned a spot in the Arizona High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1988.

Cliff had a direct impact on generations of young athletes. He was 98 when he passed away earlier this month. May he rest in peace.
