Hosted a Telephone Townhall.

Last Wednesday, I hosted a telephone townhall to update you on my work in Congress and address your questions, comments, and concerns.

From tariffs to DOGE, to supporting our veterans and protecting Medicaid, it was a fantastic discussion with over 4,000 people. As always, I appreciate hearing from you, and I thank everyone who took the time to join and especially those who asked a question!

Protecting Access to Medicaid.

While I support efforts to rein in wasteful spending and put our country back on the track of fiscal responsibility, it is critical that we do not slash or underfund critical programs, like Medicaid, SNAP, and Pell Grants. Voting for this budget resolution moves us closer to passing a reconciliation package that delivers on our promise to reduce waste, prevent the largest tax increase in American history, right-sizes our country’s fiscal health all while securing the border and modernizing Medicaid to ensure the long-term sustainability of the program.

You can read more about the budget resolution and my efforts to protect Medicaid here.

As Vice Chair of Member Services for the Congressional Hispanic Conference, I joined a group of colleagues in a letter to Speaker Mike Johnson urging him to ensure that essential programs like Medicaid, Pell Grants (which I was a recipient of), and SNAP benefits are protected from harmful cuts that would undermine their ability to deliver the critical services many Americans rely on.

You can read the full letter here.

Voted to Support Budget Plan that Secures the Border and Protects Medicaid.

Last week, I voted in favor of the Senate-approved budget resolution to move Congress closer to a reconciliation package that delivers on our promise to the American people while protecting essential services, like Medicaid, SNAP, and Pell Grants. See my full statement after the passage of the budget resolution below!

My Bill to Support Families of Veterans Passed the House UNANIMOUSLY.

Behind every brave man and woman in uniform are spouses, children, and families of veterans who face their own set of challenges during their loved one’s time in service. Standing up for our troops and veterans means ensuring that their families can receive the benefits they need, even after their loved ones have passed away.

I am thrilled that the House of Representatives unanimously voted in favor of my bill, the Prioritizing Veterans’ Survivor Act (H.R. 1288). This bill makes great strides to deliver on our promise by ensuring that surviving families of veterans have a direct line to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs (VA), so their needs and concerns are prioritized at the very top of the VA.

You can watch my remarks on the floor here.

Hosting the 3rd Annual Service Academy Day.

Over the weekend, my office hosted our 3rd Annual Service Academy Day!

Nominating the students of AZ-06 to one of our nation’s prestigious Service Academies is truly one of my greatest honors as your congressman, and I am extremely proud of our strong track-record of appointments. This event was a fantastic way to connect students with representatives from the each of the Service Academies and the ROTC program from the University of Arizona – my alma mater. So far in my time in office 24 students have been appointed to a military academy!

VETS Opportunity Act.

As a representative for nearly 80,000 veterans, one of my top priorities is ensuring they are empowered to make a successful transition back to civilian life once their time in service ends.

I recently gave remarks during the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee’s Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity’s Markup in support of my bipartisan legislation, the Veterans Education and Technical Skills (VETS) Opportunity Act (H.R. 1458), to expand veterans’ access to educational opportunities for high-demand skilled trade and vocational programs.

Securing Water Rights for Our Tribes.

As Co-Chair of the Colorado River Caucus, I am committed to working to promote a more secure water future for Arizona and the West.

I met with the new President of the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe, Carlene Yellowhair, and Tribal council members to discuss my bill, the Northeastern Arizona Water Rights Settlement Act (H.R. 2025). The largest water settlement bill in the history of Arizona, this bipartisan, bicameral bill would ratify the historic Northeastern Arizona Indian Water Rights Settlement Agreement and secure water rights for the Navajo Nation, the Hopi Tribe, and the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe.

Additionally, this agreement allows the Navajo Nation and Hopi Tribe to lease their water, creating new economic opportunities, and authorizes $5 billion to build and maintain essential water infrastructure in the region.

Finally, this legislation will establish a homeland for the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe, the last federally recognized tribe in the U.S. without one.

Voted to Safeguard Our Elections.

A secure electoral system is the cornerstone of our democracy. We must have certainty in the security and integrity of our federal elections.

This is why I voted in favor the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act (H.R. 22), a straightforward, commonsense bill that ensures only U.S. citizens can vote in U.S. federal elections.

Tucson Chamber and Sun Corridor.

Forging and strengthening federal-local partnerships is key to delivering for our communities. I had a fantastic meeting with the Tucson Metro Chamber and Sun Corridor Inc. where we talked about the opportunities and challenges facing the business community in Tucson, and how we can continue to work together to help our local economy grow and thrive.

Profiles of the American Dream.

Scholarship, character, leadership, and service.

You could make the case that those qualities are essential to the American Dream. They also happen to be the Four Pillars of the National Honor Society, one of our country’s oldest and largest student organizations.

The Dream and the Pillars converge in Nishita Kirikatti, a BASIS Oro Valley student making a difference in and out of the classroom.

Nishita is among 600 high school seniors who this year received more than $2 million in scholarships from the Society. She was among only 25 students eligible for its top honor and among only four selected for the prestigious Pillar Award.

“I believe I resonate with the character pillar the most,” Nishita recently told the Explorer newspaper. “I think a lot of my extracurriculars I do not because I’m just trying to check something off on my resume, but it’s more so I’m very personally passionate about it, and I really want to see that project or initiative carry through.”

Nishita is her school’s valedictorian and has been recognized for more than 500 hours of community service. She is the vice president of the Metropolitan Education Commission Youth Advisory Council, an American Red Cross Ambassador for Arizona and New Mexico and is a coach at her school’s Model United Nations Club. She also happens to be a third-degree black belt in Taekwondo.

Nishita plans to study medicine after graduation but whatever field she chooses, we are confident she will continue to make a difference.
