Appointing AZ-06 Students to Military Service Academies!

One of my greatest honors as your congressman is nominating the best and brightest students from across AZ-06 to serve at our nation’s prestigious Service Academies.

Last Friday, I was incredibly proud to host a reception for over 20 exceptional young future military leaders and patriots to thank them for their service and congratulate them on their appointments!

This reception was also a full-circle moment for me. Thirty-five years ago, my predecessor and friend, former-Rep. Jim Kolbe, nominated James Thompson to the Air Force Academy. This year, I had the honor of nominating his son, Austin Thompson, to the Air Force Academy. What an amazing moment! You can watch Austin, James and my video here.

Once again, congratulations to all the appointees, and thank you for your service. You are the future leaders of our military!

Hosting Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer.

No matter where I go throughout the district, one of the top issues I always hear about is the need to prioritize and strengthen workforce development programs.

Last week, I was proud to host my good friend, Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer in Tucson to visit Pima Community College -- my alma mater -- to tour their state-of-the-art job training program and discuss collaborative efforts to build a stronger workforce pipeline. As a proud product of a community college, I know firsthand that these institutions are essential to training and equipping the workers of tomorrow with the tools and knowledge they need to thrive and succeed.

Afterwards, we attended a roundtable with business leaders and members of the Arizona Builders Alliance to identify ways to address the workforce shortage for skilled construction workers and promote policies that reduce unnecessary red-tape to empower workers and developers.

Questioning Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

As Vice Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security and Arizona’s sole appropriator, I will continue to work to ensure that the brave men and women of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have the tools and resources they need to keep us safe.
Last week, I questioned DHS Secretary Kristi Noem during an oversight hearing on DHS’ budget for the upcoming fiscal year. I asked Secretary Noem about morale and recruitment numbers within the DHS, which have increased substantially under the new administration, and the need to facilitate pathways for legal immigration. You can find more information about my line of questioning here!

Welcoming a New Caseworker!

Since my first day in office, my team and I have been laser-focused on making sure our veteran-constituents are taken care of. Whether you need help navigating the complicated bureaucracy of the VA, IRS, Social Security, or any other federal agency or want a tour of the U.S. Capitol, my team is always ready to help.

I am extremely proud to welcome Nichole Murphy into my team as a Green & Gold Congressional Aide specifically focused on serving our veterans. A proud military wife, Nichole is the second team member I have hired who is entirely focused on serving our veteran community.

Congressional Wild Horse Caucus.

In my time in Congress, I have been a fierce advocate for the wild horses and burros in Arizona, and across the Western United States. These iconic animals embody the spirit and heritage of our state and deserve to be protected and treated humanely.

For too long, these animals have been subjected to cruel and costly mass helicopter round ups by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), which are frightening and often deadly to the animals. At best, these roundups result in animals being removed from their habitat to be housed in warehouses, which is inhumane and ineffective. Last fiscal year, the BLM’s roundup and removal program cost taxpayers over $109 million. As we look to reduce waste in government, this is definitely an area we can, and should, reduce spending.

I am extremely proud to be named Co-Chair of the first ever bipartisan Congressional Wild Horse Caucus, where I will work with my colleagues and animal rights stakeholders to promote humane policies, such as fertility control and habitat preservation as alternatives to expensive and inefficient roundups and removals. In April, I joined on a letter to Department of Interior Secretary Doug Burgum calling for the increased use of fertility control over helicopter roundups and removals. I look forward to adding more members to this important caucus so we can protect and preserve wild horses and burros. You can find more information about the caucus here.

Luncheon with LIBRE and Our Small Businesses.

Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, the heart and soul of our communities, and key drivers of economic growth and innovation. As your Congressman, I will continue to work to reduce unnecessary regulations, extend the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, and promote policies that boost trade and commerce.

As National Small Business Week came to a close, it was fantastic to join the LIBRE Initiative, one of the largest Hispanic-advocacy groups in the country, and the business community in Tucson to discuss the need to cut taxes and regulation while boosting trade and commerce.

VETS Opportunity Hearing.

Caring for our veterans who answered the call to serve and protect our great nation will always be one of my top priorities in Congress.

Last week, I was thrilled to see my bill, the Veterans Education and Technical Skills (VETS) Opportunity Act (H.R. 1458), pass out of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee! This bipartisan bill would expand access to educational opportunities to high-demand skilled-trade and vocational programs for veterans, whether in-person or partially online. Central AZ Water Conservation District.

Water is our most precious resource, especially for us living in the Sonoran Desert. In Congress, water has been a top priority for me, and I am proud of my work promoting legislation, funding, and other efforts to assist critical water conservation and resiliency projects across the district.

Last week, I had a fantastic meeting with the Central AZ Water Conservation District to discuss ways to improve Colorado River operations, which are critical to Arizona’s water supply. To improve Colorado River operations, I am co-leading the bipartisan Help Hoover Dam Act (H.R. 3158) to allow the Bureau of Reclamation to access millions of dollars in unused funds for the operation, maintenance, and improvement of the Hoover Dam.

American Dream Story.

Shanequa Matthias is a local girl who made good.

The Sierra Vista native is a proud product of public schools who graduated from Buena High School before earning her degree from the University of Arizona. She’s now giving back to her hometown as a fifth-grade teacher at Carmichael Elementary School.

And what a teacher she is! Shanequa was just named the 2025 Cochise County Teacher of the Year.

Talented teachers like Shanequa aren’t just amazing examples of the American Dream – they make the American Dream possible for their students by giving them the tools they need to succeed.

As the Sierra Vista Unified School District noted in a profile of Shanequa, she’s a dedicated and inspirational teacher who “brings learning to life with innovative, hands-on activities.”

Shanequa calls it learning through adventure. Her creative approach includes incorporating real-world responsibilities into her lessons, starting an after-school Cooking Club and activities like Camping Day where students earn points for good behavior and can participate in projects like writing spooky stories or making s’mores.

“We’re doing a lot of crazy things—hands-on science experiments, those kind of things,” she says. “There's different ways to approach it. That way kids don't get bored and want to not do school.”

Congratulations, Shanequa. The American Dream depends on people like you.
