August District Work Period.

Last week, I wrapped up final votes for the summer in DC and I am now home in Arizona! For the next few weeks, the House will be out of session and during that time I’ll be traveling across AZ-06 to meet with folks, hear your concerns, and share how we’ve been delivering results over the past couple of months. I look forward to seeing you around AZ-06 during the August district work period!

Securing Continued Federal Funding for Local Schools.

As a father of six and a proud product of public schools, I know firsthand the importance of investing in education at every level. I recently worked with the White House to release key funding which will support English learners, teacher professional development, 21st Century Community Learning Centers, and flexible dollars for K-12 schools across Arizona’s 6th District. This funding is critical in providing students with expanded learning opportunities.

Hearing directly from school leaders and parents in our communities helped me secure these vital resources for students and teachers that I believe reflect our shared commitment to building a brighter future through education.

Strengthening Military Readiness and Environmental Stewardship.

I recently introduced legislation to ensure military installations, like Fort Huachuca in our district and Arizona’s National Guard sites, can better manage surrounding lands critical to both our national defense and environmental conservation. My bill, H.R. 4293, updates the Sikes Act to give the Department of Defense and state military departments greater flexibility to partner with local and state organizations for responsible land management. This means improved coordination, stronger environmental protections, and better readiness for our armed forces.

This commonsense solution supports conservation without compromising security and it has the strong backing of local leaders and organizations who know how vital our military installations are to our district and nation’s future.

Big Beautiful Pell Grants.

Through the “One Big Beautiful Bill” Act, which the President signed into law on July 4th, students can now receive federal aid through Workforce Pell Grants to help pay for workforce training programs. This is excellent news!

As a graduate of Pima Community College and Pell Grant recipient, I strongly support legislative efforts to expand Pell Grant eligibility for short-term, industry-aligned workforce programs to fill the growing gaps in our workforce and directly benefit community college students, as well as low-income and underserved communities. The goal is to ensure more students have a shot at a career and the American Dream without the burden of student loans and extraneous years of schooling.

Profiles of the American Dream.

If you want to get something done, ask a busy person to do it.

Whoever came up with that proverb probably wasn’t thinking of Danny Smith, but he’s a great example of just how true those words are.

Danny is a force of nature on the eastern edge of Arizona’s 6th Congressional District. He’s all about getting stuff done.

Danny’s day job is the director of marketing and communications for Safford’s Mount Graham Regional Medical Center. He also oversees the hospital’s fundraising at its Foundation and is a recent recipient of the American Hospital Association’s Grassroots Champions Award, which is given to individuals who advocate on behalf of patients, hospitals and their communities.
But that just scratches the surface.

Danny is founder and president of the Safford Downtown Association, a past Safford City Council member, a former Graham County Supervisor, coach of the Safford varsity basketball team, a leader in the downtown Safford Theatre restoration project and a founding board member of the Graham Economic Partnership. He’s also found time to serve on the boards of the United Way of Graham and Greenlee Counties and the Gila Watershed Partnership.

Danny clearly cares a great deal about his hometown and the quality of life of his neighbors in this rural corner of Arizona. Little wonder that he was recently tapped as one of the most influential members of his community by the Eastern Arizona Courier.

Congratulations, Danny! The honor is well deserved.
