My Statement on the Federal Government Shutdown.
As you may know, a government shutdown began at 12:01 AM on Wednesday, October 1st after funding authorization for the federal government expired. Last month, I voted to prevent a government shutdown by voting YES for a straight-forward, bipartisan continuing resolution (CR) to fund the federal government with a seven-week extension through November 21. I firmly believe that we need to keep the government up and running while we continue to negotiate year-long spending bills and other issues. However, earlier this week, Senate Democrats engaged in partisan political theatre, forcing our government to shut down.
Here is my statement on the government shutdown:
As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I remain committed to advancing responsible, common-sense solutions for southeastern Arizona while ensuring that government operations and critical services continue uninterrupted for the many people in our district who rely on them. |

My Decision to Withhold My Congressional Pay During the Government Shutdown.
If our troops, border patrol agents, air traffic controllers, thousands of other federal employees, and contractors are not receiving pay during this shutdown, I firmly believe Members of Congress should not get paid either. That’s why, prior to the shutdown at midnight, I sent a letter requesting that my pay be withheld for the duration of the shutdown.
It should never have come down to this. Washington lawmakers, and specifically Senate Democrats, have a duty to do the job they were elected to do, which includes working across the aisle to responsibly fund the government and keep our government running smoothly. |

My Offices are Open, My Staff is Available.

In the meantime, my offices remain OPEN and my staff and I are here ready and will be working throughout the shutdown to serve the people of AZ06. As your congressman, I have your back. Arizona elected officials react to government shutdown KPNX-TV Phoenix
"Congressman Juan Ciscomani released a statement after "Senate Democrats failed to pass a clean, continuing resolution." His statement says in part: "Regardless of how my Democrat colleagues try to justify it, a vote against a CR is a vote to shut down the government. Period. I choose to govern, and Democrats choose politics. I voted based on what I stand for, not based on who sits in the White House. To both of our Arizona Senators, do better and put people before politics.” Government shutdown begins with insults. What happens next? AZ Central
"Rep. Juan Ciscomani, R-Arizona, said the shutdown “impacts real people, real jobs, and real kitchen tables across the nation — but especially in Arizona’s Sixth Congressional District.” It hurts the armed forces, Border Patrol agents, air-traffic controllers, seniors and veterans, he said. “I have voted and passed SIX continuing resolutions under both Presidents Biden and Trump to avoid government shutdowns,” Ciscomani continued. “As an appropriator, I know CRs are not ideal — but it prevents a shutdown of the federal government. Regardless of how my Democrat colleagues try to justify it, a vote against a CR is a vote to shut down the government. Period. I choose to govern, and Democrats choose politics. I voted based on what I stand for, not based on who sits in the White House.” Shutdown in Southern Arizona: First federal government stoppage in six years

"Republican Rep. Juan Ciscomani held a press call Tuesday afternoon prior to the shutdown. News 4 Tucson asked Ciscomani, who represents Arizona's Sixth Congressional District, about President Trump’s threat. Ciscomani emphasized his hope that no one would be fired but acknowledged the decision rests with the Trump administration. "That's being determined and one of the reasons is because it's up to the executive branch on how they do that. Regardless of who's in the White House, they have the authority to determine what stays open and what doesn't stay open," Ciscomani said. Earlier Tuesday, Ciscomani placed the blame on Democrats. "They're demanding additional aspects of this bill that are completely not germane to the actual bill and the funding mechanisms of Congress," he told reporters. "They essentially want to advance their own policies through this bill that have nothing to do with funding." Food bank prepares to handle federal worker needs in Tucson KOLD Tucson
“I have opposed a shutdown under both President Biden and President Trump,” said Rep. Juan Ciscomani, R-CD 6, during a virtual press conference in the hours before the shutdown. The congressman pointed out he voted for a seven-week continuing resolution to keep the government running. The clean resolution had nothing attached. Democrats, including Arizona Senator Ruben Gallego, have said they are defending affordable health care by calling for premiums not to double. Ciscomani wanted to approve the resolution so that the government would continue to operate while that debate continues. “Nobody that has been through a shutdown recommends it. Not one person. It’s more expensive to be in a shutdown and get out of shutdown,” Ciscomani said. The congressman pointed out that he has requested the Chief Administrative Officer for the House of Representatives to withhold his pay during the shutdown." |
