YESTERDAY: Urging Our State’s U.S. Senators to End the Government Shutdown.

Yesterday, I sent a letter alongside my Arizona House Republican colleagues calling on Arizona Senators Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego to stop playing politics and prioritize Arizonans by voting YES on a clean, seven-week continuing resolution (CR) that would reopen the federal government.

It is up to them to do the right thing. You may click HERE or scroll below to read my full letter.

Reopening the Government from Shutdown.

Last month, I voted to prevent a government shutdown by supporting a common-sense, bipartisan continuing resolution (CR) to responsibly fund the federal government and keep critical services running for constituents across AZ06 while negotiations for end-of-year funding continued. While continuing resolutions are never ideal, they are necessary to avoid causing harm to the people I serve across our district.

In the midst of the chaos and uncertainty, my office has created a website with resources available and answers to questions you may have. You may visit our website HERE.\

Unfortunately, Senate Democrats, led by Senator Schumer (D-NY), have forced a shutdown that is now impacting our troops, border patrol agents, seniors, veterans, and families right here in Arizona’s Sixth District. It’s affecting over 20,000 federal workers in our district, who rely on the federal government for their paycheck.

If our military servicemembers, border patrol agents, air traffic controllers, and other federal employees are not receiving a paycheck during this shutdown, then Members of Congress should not receive one either. That is why, before the shutdown began on October 1stI sent a letter requesting that my pay be withheld for the duration of the shutdown.

As a Member of the Appropriations Committee and your congressmanI will keep working to reopen the government as quickly as possible. In the meantime, however, my offices remain open and ready to assist you with federal agencies like the VA, Social Security, and the IRS. If you or your family need help navigating the impacts of the shutdown, please visit my website to see resources here and reach out if you have additional questions. We are here to help.

Working with the VA to Open the Sierra Vista Vet Center Outstation in Cochise County.

I’m proud to announce the opening of the Sierra Vista Vet Center Outstation, a critical win for our veterans in Cochise County and all of southern Arizona! Since the Department of Veterans Affair’s closure of the Sierra Vista access point in 2023, I’ve pressed relentlessly to restore local services, and this past week, we delivered! With more than 18,000 veterans calling Cochise County home, this outstation ensures they no longer face long drives or red tape to access the benefits they’ve earned during their time in military service.

I’m honored to have fought for this outcome, and I’ll continue working every day to ensure our nearly 80,000 veterans across our district receive the timely care and support they are owed. This Vet Center Outstation is located at 4481 Campus Drive Sierra Vista, AZ 85635.

This week, the Greater Nogales Santa Cruz County Port Authority celebrated its 20th anniversary. I was incredibly grateful to be there to celebrate their two decades of leadership that have strengthened trade, improved our ports of entry, and enhanced the quality of life for our border communities and neighborhoods. Thank you for having me and I look forward to your next twenty years!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This October marks 40 years of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast Cancer is the most common cancer among women globally and represents an estimated quarter of all cancer forms that can occur in women every single year.

My mom lost her mother to breast cancer when she was just 7 years old. Years later, my mom had her own encounter with this terrible disease and survived. As a husband and father to three daughters, I know the stakes of women’s health are deeply important. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I remain dedicated to advancing research and improving outcomes for women who are battling this terrible disease.

Rep. Ciscomani calls on members of Congress to forgo pay during shutdown, argues Democrats have ability to end it
AZPM News
“As part of a bipartisan trend in Arizona, Representative Juan Ciscomani is choosing not to collect his congressional salary during the government shutdown. The Republican representing the sixth congressional district told AZPM he is forgoing his paychecks during the shutdown out of solidarity with federal workers. There are over 20,000 civilian federal workers and military members in Ciscomani’s district. He said he “would be happy to look at” a bill codifying a pay freeze for all members of Congress during shutdowns.”

Profiles of the American Dream.

Service to country brought Amos L. Lewis came to Tucson 40 years ago. Service to God kept him here.

This native of Pinckard, Alabama got his first taste of the Arizona desert when he was stationed at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. After serving 21 years in the U.S. Air Force, he retired as a Master Sergeant and embraced his calling as the full-time senior pastor of Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church.

We salute Dr. Lewis this week as he leaves the congregation he nurtured and grew to more than 1,000 members. He’s returning to his home state, where he’s taking up a new challenge as the senior pastor of the Greater Beulah Missionary Baptist Church in Dothan.

At a recent community celebration of his service to Rising Star, Dr. Lewis said he was only 27 when he started at the Tucson church. He said he was newly ordained and had never performed a wedding, a baptism or a funeral. But it was clear from the outpouring of love at that event, his decades of leadership and service will be remembered fondly.

“That’s the purpose of leadership, to serve people,” he said. “That’s why God gives us power, that’s why God gives us position. So that we can serve other people.”

Best of luck, Dr. Lewis. And thank you for your service.
