Celebrating Thanksgiving with our AZ06 Community.

I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving this past week, filled with gratitude, joy, and the company of loved ones.

Ahead of the holiday last week, some of my kids and I spent some time in Tucson at the Center of Opportunity for the 37th Annual Thanksgiving Blessings Event, where we joined 450 volunteers to serve 3,000 meals, including 270 turkeys and 1,200 pounds of potatoes to families from our community! I am incredibly grateful for all the volunteers, like University of Arizona football players and other philanthropic organizations, who worked to make the holidays brighter for families across Arizona’s 6th Congressional District.

I am also thankful for our first responders, law enforcement officers, emergency personnel, and military members serving here and abroad, who couldn’t be with their loved ones because they’re standing guard for ours during the holidays. That’s why recently I was honored to visit with the dedicated servicemembers at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and the 162nd Fighter Wing to share in person how grateful I am for their sacrifices and service to our country.

Small Business Saturday: The Backbone of Our Local Economy.

This past weekend, we celebrated Small Business Saturday to recognize the hard-working, family-owned shops and local entrepreneurs who keep our Main Streets thriving, drive Arizona’s economy, and strengthen our communities across AZ06. I’m so grateful for everything our small business community does!

Statement on the Shooting of Two National Guardsmen in D.C.

Last week, two National Guard members were shot in Washington, D.C., near the White House. It is a stark reminder of the risks faced by those who wear the uniform. Our National Guard has done heroic work this year, working around the clock to make our Capitol in D.C. safer. I am so grateful for their service and the courage they show every single day to keep our communities safe.

My prayers are with the family of West Virginia National Guard Member Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, who sadly passed away last week from her injuries. Laura and I are also praying for Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe’s full and swift recovery.

Co-led the Introduction of the Bipartisan Large-Scale Water Recycling Reauthorization Act.

As Arizonans, we know firsthand that water is our state’s most precious resource and that more must be done to ensure future generations continue to have access to water.

With drought continuing across many areas of Arizona, I am proud to co-lead with Rep. Susie Lee (D-NV) in introducing the bipartisan Large-Scale Water Recycling Reauthorization Act (H.R. 6204), a bill to extend federal support for large-scale water recycling. By strengthening our ability to conserve water through investing in major recycling projects, this bill will keep taps flowing for families across the Southwest for years to come.

“TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) — Gospel Rescue Mission celebrated Thanksgiving early with thousands of people from our community at their 37th annual Thanksgiving Blessings event. Hundreds of people are seated with hot meals provided by Gospel Rescue Mission as they sit down and enjoy this meal right before Thanksgiving. Congressman Juan Ciscomani was also in attendance, bringing his family to help Gospel Rescue Mission hand out meals. ‘I love coming here every year," Ciscomani said. "I’ve got around me some of my kids. "I always like to show up and volunteer, pass out the food, and do whatever they ask us to do. It’s a great time of year to be able to give.’

Arizona's Rep. Ciscomani co-sponsors legislation to extend water recycling program
KJZZ
“Arizona Congressman Juan Ciscomani is co-sponsoring, with Nevada Congresswoman Susie Lee, a bipartisan effort to extend water recycling funding that could shore up the state’s water supply. Ciscomani is pushing for the extension of the Large-Scale Water Recycling Program, which was first established in 2021 and is set to expire next year.’ Water is the lifeblood of Arizona,’ Ciscomani said in a statement. “As we face worsening drought in Arizona, I am proud to co-lead this critical legislation which will help Western communities, like Southern Arizona, bolster their conservation efforts through water recycling efforts’. The fund still has $125 million left of the original $450 million the federal government allocated. States can apply for that funding and use it for water reuse projects, but it must also be matched by local funding.”

Profiles of the American Dream.

Tomás Díaz de la Rubia came to the United States in 1981 to spend a year studying at an American college. He not only ended up staying, but his journey is a testament to the American Dream.
Last month marked the one-year anniversary of Dr. Díaz de la Rubia’s start as the University of Arizona’s senior vice president of research and innovation. It’s a critical position. His job, simply put, is to take to the next level a university that already enjoys a world-class reputation as a major research institution.

No pressure, right?

Dr. Díaz de la Rubia’s career path from the Asturias region of northwestern Spain to Tucson and the desert southwest of the United States is an inspiration. It’s an amazing example of the power of education and what can be achieved through hard work.

He has a bachelor’s degree and a doctorate in physics from the State University of New York, and prior to his arrival at UA he held key leadership positions at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Deloitte Consulting, Purdue University and the University of Oklahoma. He also is a fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Research for Dr. Díaz de la Rubia is a broad endeavor. It isn’t just about laboratories, telescopes or particle accelerators. “Research is also about the human condition,” he said recently. “It’s not just about physics and engineering. It really is everything together.”
