Delivering New Funding Wins for AZ-06.

The House just passed a crucial appropriations bill that will have direct impacts on the communities within our district. The Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies (CJS) Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year 2027preliminarily secures critical community project funding (CPFs) for local law enforcement and workforce development. There was no better time for this funding to pass than during National Police Week, as it further supports the men and women who serve and protect our local communities.

This bill preliminarily allocates the following funding:

• $4,200,000 to the Oro Valley Police Department to upgrade and replace the current mobile and handheld radios and equip the Town’s new police department headquarters with modern law enforcement technology, security systems, and operational equipment.
• $2,000,000 to the Sahuarita Police Department’s Emergency Power Initiative to ensure uninterrupted around-the-clock operations at the SPD Headquarters.
• $2,000,000 to the University of Arizona for the installation of high-tech state-of-the art ground testing and manufacturing equipment for use in hypersonics and directed energy research and workforce development applications, which are critical for the future of national security.
• And $1,000,000 to the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office to purchase four mobile communications trailers to provide adequate radio coverage to Cochise County Sheriff’s radios for drone operation, search and rescue command and control, and high-definition video surveillance.

As the only appropriator from the Arizona delegation, I am proud to advocate for the funding of community projects that will support the communities of southeastern Arizona and bring back your tax dollars to our district. Discussing HUD's Mission with Secretary Turner.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Scott Turner believes the main goal of HUD is to ensure that the American Dream of owning a home is in reach. In a House Appropriations Subcommittee hearing last week, I had the opportunity to ask Secretary Turner questions on his priorities. I spoke with him about my bill the FAST Housing Act, which makes homeownership more accessible in local communities. Secretary Turner voiced his support of this legislation as it aligns with his mission at HUD.

I also asked Secretary Turner his thoughts on the role that nonprofits, receiving no funds from the federal government, have in carrying out this mission of protecting the American Dream. The Secretary recently visited AZ-06 and saw firsthand the incredible work that one of our nonprofits, Teen Challenge of Arizona, does to lift people out of homelessness and addiction and give them hope for a brighter future. In response to my question, Secretary Turner said, "Federal government doesn’t have all the answers. We need our private partners and our nonprofits and our faith-based partners to help us to eradicate this issue."

I am grateful to Secretary Turner for his commitment to the American people and defense of the American Dream and look forward to continuing to work alongside him.

Fighting for America’s Bravest.

Veterans, American soldiers, and military families represent the heart of this nation: a willingness to fight for and defend freedom. Throughout my time in office, I have been a champion of our veterans and military and have advocated for legislation that directly supports those who have or are currently serving our country.

Just last week, the House passed the FY2027 Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, which fully funds veterans’ health care and benefits, invests in improvements at VA medical facilities across the nation, and continues funding for crucial mental health and suicide prevention programs for our veterans.

I am proud to have supported this bill – the first appropriations bill to pass the House for FY27 - and remain committed to fighting for our veterans, active military, and their families.

An Update from a Military Service Academy Appointee.

Hector Lepley, who our office had the honor of nominating to a military service academy last year, reached out to us to give us an exciting update. Hector, who graduated from Tombstone High School in 2025, just completed his first year at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. After a year of being a plebe at the USMMA, he is now a recognized midshipman of the regiment.

The next big challenge for Hector will be going to sea in June. He told us, "I will continue to do my best to represent my home and the people who have made it possible for me to be here."

Hector represents the next generation of leaders and servicemembers who are standing up to protect and defend our freedom. Hector, thank you for your willingness to serve. We are so proud of you and are excited to hear from you again soon!

Sierra Vista high school student's painting to hang at U.S. Capitol

"An 11th-grade student at Buena High School in Sierra Vista will have her art on display at the United States Capitol for the next year. Eyah Prior was awarded top honors in the Congressional Art Competition for Arizona's Sixth District for her oil pastel painting 'The Feeling of Sunshine.' According to a news release from Congressman Juan Ciscomani's office, the competition 'is a statewide initiative showcasing the creativity and talent of high school students.' Prior will get a chance to travel to Washington D.C. to see her work on display as part of the recognition, the news release said. Catalina Foothills High School student Ellen Kim, who took second place in the competition, will have her artwork on display at Ciscomani's Washington D.C. office in the 461 Cannon House Office Building. Samson Riesgo, from St. David High School took third place. His piece, 'I Believe,' will be on display in Ciscomani's Tucson District office."

"The visit was arranged by the office of U.S. Rep. Juan Ciscomani, and the Republican congressman who represents part of Casa Grande participated in the meeting. Oz, head of U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services since last year, spoke about the challenge of providing quality care without damaging the government’s financial health and gathered input about what is being done at the nonprofit Banner, based in Phoenix and operator of 33 hospitals in six states with more than 55,000 employees. He talked to Chuck Lehn, president of Banner Health Plans and Networks, responsible for developing accountable care solutions for Banner Health and its affiliated physicians, and Dr. Marjorie Bessel, chief clinical officer of Banner Health."

Ciscomani Secures New Military Mission For Fort Huachuca

"Congressman Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ-06) has secured a significant new mission for Fort Huachuca, marking a major victory for national security, economic growth, and Arizona’s Sixth Congressional District. The U.S. Department of War has selected Fort Huachuca as the primary site for the new mission and squadron, recognizing the installation’s unique strategic capabilities, advanced infrastructure, and strong regional support. Local leaders and stakeholders across Cochise County and Southern Arizona are applauding Rep. Ciscomani’s determined advocacy and successful collaboration with the Trump administration and the Department of Defense. 'This new mission is a win for Sierra Vista and Cochise County, a win for Arizona and a win for our national security,' stated Ciscomani. 'Most importantly, this a testament to Fort Huachuca and its nationally recognized role as an unequalled strategic asset, not just today, but for the future of our national defense.' Fort Huachuca, located approximately 15 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border, is the largest employer in Cochise County. It features 946 square miles of restricted airspace and 2,500 square miles of protected electronic ranges. Its selection was strengthened by a robust regional ecosystem that includes the University of Arizona, along with major defense contractors such as Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, and Honeywell. Local leaders emphasized the mission’s broad benefits, including high-quality job creation and substantial economic impact."

Profiles of the American Dream.

Few people other than historians or political geeks know that Simon Guggenheim served as a U.S. Senator from Colorado in the early 20th century. He served only one term but his name lives on in the form of the prestigious fellowship he established with his wife in 1925.

Guggenheim Fellowships are awarded every year to exceptional writers, scholars, scientists and artists – trail blazers who’ve come up with new ways of doing things, looking at our world or understanding the universe.

This brings us to Erika Hamden, an astrophysicist and professor at the University of Arizona who last month was chosen from a pool of nearly 5,000 applicants to be in the 101st class of Guggenheim Fellows.

Congratulations to Erika and Elaine Romero, an award-winning writer and UA professor in the School of Theatre, Film and Television who also is part of this year’s Guggenheim class of 223 fellowship recipients.

We caught up with Erika recently at a wide-ranging panel discussion hosted at the Arizona Inn by The Chamber of Southern Arizona. Her passion for teaching the next generation of astrophysicists was inspiring.

Erika came to Tucson by way of Harvard, Columbia and the California Institute of Technology. She is director of UA’s Space Institute, serves on the State of Arizona Space Commission and hosts the television show "New Frontiers" on AZPM.

As she notes matter-of-factly on her website, "I study the universe."
