Dear San Franciscan,

This is a momentous week for rebuilding America’s infrastructure and rebuilding our middle class, as yesterday President Biden proudly signed the historic and bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which the House of Representatives passed on November 6th. 

With President Biden and Democratic Majorities in Congress, we are committed to delivering results that enhance the lives of all Americans. With the stroke of the President’s pen, we took a giant step to rebuild America’s roads, bridges, water systems, transit and more:

• creating good-paying union jobs and workforce development
• protecting clean air and clean water,
• delivering better quality of life with equity and investments in broadband to connect our communities
• helping businesses thrive and turbo-charging our global competitiveness,
• making America safer and protecting our planet.

While our crumbling infrastructure has long held us back, these monumental investments will ensure America can outcompete any nation on earth for decades to come.

Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi joins President Biden, Vice President Harris, Members of Congress, state and local officials and union leaders at the White House as the President signs the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill into law.

In addition to strengthening our roads and bridges, expanding broadband, working to ensure clean drinking water for every child, this bill includes many wins for our state and the San Francisco Bay region: 

• $25.3 billion for California highways and $4.2 billion for bridge repairs and replacements.
• $9.45 billion over five years to help improve Muni, BART and other California transit agencies providing essential transit services public transportation options – the single largest investment in public transit in history.  We can also compete for $8 billion nationally in transit expansion grants that can help projects like Caltrain electrification and the Downtown Extension to bring trains into the Salesforce Transit Center.
• More than $8 billion for water needs in the Western United States, during a time of critical drought.
• $5 billion nationally for Safe Streets for All, which San Francisco can apply for funding towards its Vision Zero initiative to prevent traffic deaths.
• $5 billion nationally to protect power grid from wildfire and extreme weather, like burying power lines, to reduce risk of fire and reduce disturbances caused by power shut offs.
• $3.5 billion over five years to improve California drinking and wastewater infrastructure.
• $3.3 billion nationally to prevent wildfires with wildfire mitigation, hazardous fuels reduction and prescribed burns on federal lands, as well as better pay for federal firefighters and more permanent firefighting positions.
• $1.5 billion for infrastructure development at California airports like SFO over five years.
• $24 million to clean up the San Francisco Bay estuary.

The signing of this bill comes after I recently led a Congressional delegation to Glasgow to meet with global leaders at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP26, where we conveyed the strong commitment of the U.S. Congress in addressing the climate crisis.

These are just a few of the momentous steps Democrats are taking toward realizing our transformative agenda.  Next, the House will pass our Build Back Better Act to bring down the everyday costs that burden working parents – from health care to child care to paid leave to prescription drugs and more – while also securing one of the largest middle class tax cuts in history.  

Together, Democrats in Congress and the Biden-Harris Administration are hard at work to forge the greatest progress for families in a generation.
