World AIDS Day
World AIDS Day is a solemn opportunity to remember tens of millions of beautiful souls we have lost around the world to HIV/ and AIDS — and pray for their families.
Over the last two decades, our fight against HIV/AIDS in the world has been transformed by PEPFAR — made possible by the leadership of President Bush and bipartisan support in Congress. It was my privilege to be a leader in this fight on the Foreign Operations Subcommittee, where we secured more than $100 billion for PEPFAR to support its life-giving saving work.
After visiting the clinics in Africa and hearing the voice of the people, the resounding message was that PEPFAR gave them hope. They would never have been tested for HIV/AIDS if they did not think there was an opportunity for resources that could improve their lives. As we as we go forward, let us hope that this body of Congress will soon reauthorize PEPFAR, for what it means to the world.

Bay Area Ferry Service to Receive $22 Million from Bipartisan Infrastructure Law
Following my letters of support to U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, the San Francisco Bay Area is set to receive nearly $22 million in federal grants to help modernize the Bay Area’s ferry system. This funding was awarded to the Bay Area under our Bipartisan Infrastructure Law – passed by the Democratic Congress and signed into law by President Joe Biden two years ago.
The San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Agency will receive $15.9 million to retrofit two of their existing ferry floats in the cities of Alameda and San Francisco by installing battery energy storage systems to improve reliability and air quality. The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway & Transportation District will receive $6 million to revitalize the deteriorating passenger boarding system by installing a wider boarding platform and hydraulic gangplanks that extend to the vessels – providing safe and comfortable boarding access to passengers during all tide conditions.
The federal Department of Transportation grants announced for San Francisco will improve the quality of life for Bay Area working families by modernizing our ferry system to be cleaner, safer and more reliable – while creating good-paying jobs for San Franciscans. Thanks to the visionary leadership of President Biden, America is back on track to have infrastructure that is the envy of the world.
