Uplifting Education and Innovation

Championing Education

This week, I was honored to meet with President Lynn Mahoney and student leaders from San Francisco State University during their visit to Washington. They spoke not just for SFSU, but for every student working to afford college, stay in the country they call home and see their campus communities supported.

We discussed the urgent need to protect Pell Grants, support Dreamers and invest in Minority Serving Institutions like SFSU. With more than 7,000 first-generation students and nearly three-quarters of undergraduates relying on financial aid, SFSU reflects the promise of public education—and the stakes of disinvestment. I will keep fighting to ensure every student has the opportunity to learn, thrive and lead.

Supporting the Building Trades

I was proud to meet with leaders from the San Francisco Building and Construction Trades Council and affiliates from across California this week. These hardworking men and women are the backbone of our state's infrastructure—and their advocacy is essential as we confront renewed attacks on collective bargaining, apprenticeship programs and fair wages.

We discussed the Trump Administration’s reckless push to roll back protections that ensure good-paying union jobs — and I made clear that I will always stand with California's hard working families to ensure the dignity of work is respected.  America’s middle class is the backbone of our economy — and the middle class bears a union label.

Celebrating Young Innovators
I was honored to deliver keynote remarks at the House of Code celebration in the Capitol this week, where we recognized the incredible student winners of the Congressional App Challenge. These brilliant young coders are not only shaping the future of technology—they’re expanding its possibilities.

I was especially proud to recognize San Francisco’s own Anna Beischer, whose app HerStory highlights the underrepresentation of women on platforms like Wikipedia and uses AI to help close that gap. Anna is a shining example of the innovation and civic-mindedness that defines San Francisco’s next generation. As we look to the future, these young developers remind us that investing in STEM education and uplifting diverse voices in tech isn’t just smart policy—it’s essential to progress.

A constituent contacted our office requesting assistance on behalf a sibling who was applying for a visa to visit their sick mother in the U.S.
My staff wrote to the appropriate consulate requesting consideration for the sibling’s application, and we were pleased to learn that the visa application was approved.
