House Republicans Must Pass Meaningful Immigration Reform

A MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSWOMAN KAMLAGER-DOVE:

Dear Friend,

It has been a busy week in Washington! I attended hearings, took votes, and spoke on the House Floor about immigration reform, gun violence in our communities, and our debt limit crisis. In addition, I co-led a bill this week with Rep. Cleaver (MO-05) to address the work conditions of incarcerated individuals.

IMMIGRATION REFORM

This week, I spoke on the House Floor on Republicans' immoral and inhumane plan for immigration reform. We have a humanitarian crisis at our border which their Child Deportation Act does nothing to alleviate. This is especially concerning now that Title 42 has expired. Instead, their plan eliminates asylum, criminalizes faith-based organizations who play a critical role in supporting immigrants, and worsens the burden on our border agents and ports of entry. We are a nation of immigrants, but legislation like this runs counter to our values. It's time to put forward legislation that provides real solutions instead of punishing individuals desperate to flee authoritarian regimes or catastrophic situations.

GUN VIOLENCE

This past weekend, I was on MSNBC's Ayman in response to the tragic shooting in Allen, TexasI also participated in a Special Order Hour with my Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) colleagues to discuss the devastating impact gun violence has on our communities. I will continue to talk to my Republican colleagues to urge them to come to the table on reasonable gun violence prevention legislation to save lives. We cannot offer hollow thoughts and prayers while our communities become war zones.

DEBT LIMIT

Early estimates say that the United States could default as soon as June 1. I spoke on the Floor this week and called attention to the games Republicans continue to play with our debt limit. Their proposed plan cuts funding to vital programs like Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and veterans benefits. This week, Congressional Leaders and President Biden met at the White House, and I remain hopeful that we will be able to pass a clean debt limit and pay our bills.

NEW LEGISLATION

Later in the week, I was glad to co-lead legislation with Rep. Cleaver to address the mistreatment of prison workers. The Correctional Facilities Occupational Safety and Health Act will safeguard our incarcerated workers and increase accountability for our prison system. We cannot allow our prisoners to continue to be exploited and harmed by the dangerous working conditions they are forced to endure. I will always fight to reform our criminal justice system to make it more just for all.

DISTRICT ROUND UP!

I wanted to take a moment to highlight some of the great events I was able to attend last weekend in Los Angeles. I had fun speaking to foster care advocates, highlighting the potential for careers in government for young women, and enjoying the food and festivities at Smorgasburg LA as part of the AAPI LA Market. I can't wait for more time back in LA, so I can attend more important events like these!

It's so important to highlight the critical work of foster care advocates and social workers during Foster Care Month.

I loved speaking with young women from Ready to Launch and Ignite at UCLA about the potential for careers in public service.

The AAPI LA Market was such a great opportunity to celebrate AAPI heritage during AANHPI Month and enjoy food and merchandise from local vendors.
