Talking Trump, Juvenile Justice,
Hip-Hop

A MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSWOMAN KAMLAGER-DOVE:

Dear Friend,

My last week in session was a busy one as I prepared to return to Los Angeles for the August District work period. I appeared on MSNBC and Spectrum News 1 SoCal to discuss the news of the day from Trump indictments to the new juvenile justice reform I just introduced. This week, I introduced a resolution recognizing the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop. On Wednesday, I spoke on my resolution calling for Eyvin Hernandez's release in the Committee on Foreign Affairs during markup, where it passed with bipartisan support. I worked with my colleagues to introduce some important legislation to address different issues ranging from climate change to ending solitary confinement in Federal facilities.

MSNBC WITH LINDSEY REISER

I was glad to sit down with Lindsey Reiser in-studio to discuss the multiple Trump indictments, mind-blowing Republican dysfunction here in Congress, and the racist Black history curriculum decision in Florida. The recent actions of the Republican Party serve to foment distrust in our institutions in an attempt to distract from the chaos and disorder within their own party. At a time when diversity, equity, and inclusion programs are under attack, we cannot allow Governor DeSantis to erase Black history. I will always fight to put democracy, truth, and justice at the forefront.

SPECTRUM NEWS 1 SOCAL WITH CATALINA VILLEGAS

Last weekend, I discussed the Childhood Offenders Rehabilitation and Safety Act, my work calling for the release of Eyvin Hernandez, and Governor Abbott of Texas' inhumane treatment of migrants at the border. The Childhood Offenders Rehabilitation and Safety Act would better address the needs of juveniles in our justice system while providing holistic pathways to rehabilitation. I also talked about my constituent Eyvin Hernandez, who has been wrongfully detained for over a year, and how I'm working in a bipartisan manner to call on the Biden Administration and the State Department to work to secure his release. Lastly, I had to call attention to Governor Abbott's treatment of migrants at the border. These brutal tactics don't move the needle on immigration policy and will not solve the humanitarian crisis we are facing.

RESOLUTION HONORING THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIP-HOP

I’m a child of Hip-Hop, and for the past 50 years we have seen Hip-Hop infuse itself into American culture through music, art, fashion, and film, which is why I was so excited to introduce a resolution honoring the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop with the support of so many of my colleagues, including Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries. This resolution includes California’s own artists, like Tupac and Nipsey Hussle, who have played critical roles in the vibrancy of the Los Angeles music scene. We must continue to support the artists whose lyrics foster freedom of expression, creativity, and storytelling. On Hip-Hop’s golden anniversary, I honor how the Black community has used Hip-Hop as a tool of unity during some of the most harrowing parts of our nation’s history, and I hope that this resolution sends a message against those who try to erase us, demonize us, or call us out of our name. I also hope this resolution empowers each of us to see the special way Hip-Hop has manifested in our lives.

EYVIN HERNANDEZ RESOLUTION PASSES MARKUP

Earlier this month, I introduced a resolution calling for the release of Eyvin Hernandez, my constituent who has been wrongfully detained in Venezuela for over a year. This week, my resolution was brought to the Committee on Foreign Affairs to be marked up and passed with bipartisan support. This is a very important step in the process of bringing the resolution to the House Floor for a vote. I will continue to work with my colleagues and the Bring Eyvin Home Coalition to bring this angel back to the City of Angels.

NEW LEGISLATION

Before heading home to Los Angeles, where I look forward to engaging with all of you over the next month at various community events, I worked with my colleagues to introduce the CLEAN Energy NOW Acts to address climate change, the End Solitary Confinement Act to end this inhumane practice in our Federal facilities, and the Youth, Peace, and Security Act to emphasize the importance of youth leadership and involvement in worldwide peacebuilding and conflict prevention activities.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK

This week, I spoke during debate on the importance of assisting our Haitian neighbors as they confront humanitarian, political, and security crises. We cannot leave our neighbors to fend for themselves. I also celebrated National Intern Day, highlighting the work of my incredible interns in my DC and Los Angeles offices, and I spoke with Cassie Semyon from Spectrum News 1 on the House Steps about a possible impeachment inquiry – pure hooey in my opinion!

As always, I encourage you to contact my offices with any comments or concerns about my work in Congress, the 37th District, or any other matters. Please connect with me on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram to stay up to date on my work in Congress. If you are experiencing issues with Social Security, passports, immigration, or another Federal agency, send in a casework request, and my staff will be happy to assist you.

Sincerely,
