A MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSWOMAN KAMLAGER-DOVE:
Dear Friend,
Combating food insecurity and safeguarding nutrition assistance programs have been priorities for me throughout my career. This week, I was glad to meet with individuals in the nutrition space to see how they are working to address food insecurity and hunger in CA-37. I want to especially thank the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, Central Avenue WIC Office, and SEE-LA Farmers' Market for allowing me to tour their facilities and discuss the importance of nutrition for families across Los Angeles. I stand by my colleagues in the House to protect important programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) from Republicans' efforts to undermine and weaken these programs.
Earlier this week, I joined many across the nation in celebrating the one-year anniversary of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) – a historic law that was championed by congressional Democrats to invest in our economy, communities, and our climate. Provisions in the IRA are helping California and so many other states address climate change, lower costs for families, and create good-paying jobs, and it’s only just getting started.
THE IMPORTANCE OF NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS IN CA-37
During my visits with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, Central Avenue WIC Office in South Los Angeles, and the SEE-LA Farmers' Market along Central Avenue, I toured the facilities, met with staff, and discussed how important nutrition assistance programs like SNAP and WIC are in the face of Republican efforts to impose cuts to these programs. If Republicans had their way, the impact of their cuts to nutrition assistance programs would be devastating. Right now, 1 in 5 Californians are food insecure. Last year, SNAP helped to support 4.4 million Californians – almost 1 in 9 people – including over 56,000 households in CA-37. So many people rely on SNAP and WIC to help keep food on the table and afford healthy food options. We cannot let Republicans have their way.
Conversations I had during these District events helped paint a picture of how vital efforts to address hunger are for the people in California's 37th District. From the food distributed at the Food Bank, to the nutrition and breastfeeding support for women and children at the WIC Office, to the Market Match program at the SEE-LA Farmers' Market that gives SNAP-receiving families more purchasing power to buy fresh fruits and vegetables, these programs support families who are food insecure, ensuring they have access to the nutritious food they need.
Just as I have done throughout my career, I vow to help protect SNAP, WIC, and other nutrition programs through legislation like the Farm Bill, child nutrition reauthorization legislation, and agriculture appropriations. We can never allow families and children to go hungry, and we cannot back down from defending nutrition assistance programs for millions across the country.

THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF THE INFLATION REDUCTION ACT
One year ago, President Biden signed congressional Democrats’ Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) into law, making massive investments that helped lower everyday costs for consumers, revitalize our economy after a devastating pandemic wiped out millions of jobs, and confront climate pollution in our communities. In just twelve months, I have been glad to see how the IRA is working for Angelenos.
Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, 33,000 people who signed up for an Affordable Care Act marketplace plan in CA-37 are saving an average of $960 on their health insurance. The IRA also secured a $35 per month cap on insulin prices for seniors and other Medicare beneficiaries, saving the approximately 1,000 people in CA-37 who use insulin an average of $320 annually. By lowering the costs of health care, the IRA has positively impacted so many lives. The IRA has unleashed the power of cleaner, cheaper energy, saving families hundreds of dollars on their energy bills every year, and continues to provide thousands of dollars in discounts to help families upgrade to more efficient appliances and vehicles. The IRA is bolstering the California economy through the creation of over 40,000 jobs since President Biden took office, contributing to the record lows in unemployment.
