I Voted Yes to Vacate the Chair

A MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSWOMAN KAMLAGER-DOVE:

Dear Friend,

Kevin McCarthy's removal as Speaker this week was a solemn moment in our nation's history. It was the result of a repeated pattern of broken promises and hijacked legislative processes that have endangered the welfare of our constituents and our nation and besieged our government since Republicans won the House Majority. Under Speaker McCarthy, the Republican Conference made a mockery of our institution by changing House rules to fit their extremist agenda, refusing to work in a bipartisan manner with House Democrats, cramming harmful amendments into must-pass legislation like the National Defense Authorization Act, initiating a baseless impeachment inquiry into President Biden, and backing out of a deal made earlier this year during debt limit negotiations, which set us on a path toward a disastrous government shutdown that we just narrowly avoided this past weekend.

This is why I joined House Democrats in voting "yes" on the motion to vacate the chair.

MOTION TO VACATE THE CHAIR VOTE

For the first time in our nation's history, the current Speaker was ousted from Speakership after the motion to vacate the chair vote passed in the House. McCarthy's extreme policies and pandering to his far-right flank set us on a path that ultimately led to his removal. Time after time, Speaker McCarthy proved he couldn't be trusted because he allowed the most extreme in his Conference to have all the power, with little respect to the tradition, process, or sanctity of our democracy. Under his tenure, the Freedom Caucus controlled the Chamber, bringing harmful, inarticulate, and hyperpartisan legislation to the House Floor, hurting millions of Americans.

I did not come to Congress to bail out Kevin McCarthy, which is why I voted "yes" to vacate the chair alongside my Democratic colleagues. Even amidst this chaos, I will continue to work with House Democrats to prioritize the needs of Angelenos.

INTERVIEW WITH MSNBC'S YASMIN VOSSOUGHIAN ON AVERTING A GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN

This past weekend, I voted with House Democrats to pass a 45-day Continuing Resolution to avoid a government shutdown and keep the government open for the people it serves. Before casting my vote, I spoke to MSNBC's Yasmin Vossoughian on 'Yasmin Vossoughian Reports' to discuss the importance of the vote and how Congressional Democrats will continue to work together to fully fund the government ahead of the new November 17 deadline. We must ensure that everyday Americans have access to critical programs and prevent Republicans from slashing the services they depend on to survive.

THE HISTORIC APPOINTMENT OF SENATOR LAPHONZA BUTLER

I was glad to attend Senator Laphonza Butler's ceremonial swearing-in this week, and I look forward to working with her to address the needs of Californians. As the sole serving Black female Senator, first openly LGBTQ+ person of color in the Senate, and the first LGBTQ+ Senator from California, she brings a unique and dynamic voice to the Chamber and proves that representation matters. I welcome her whole-heartedly to Congress and the California delegation.

THE PASSING OF SENATOR DIANNE FEINSTEIN

While I celebrate the appointment of Senator Butler, I continue to mourn the loss of Senator Dianne Feinstein after her passing last week. She was a champion for Californians during her decades of public service, supporting critical legislation like the first-ever Federal Assault Weapons Ban, the Violence Against Women Act, and the Respect for Marriage Act in addition to pushing for the publication of the 2014 Senate Intelligence Committee report on CIA torture. She was a giant in California politics, and she will be greatly missed.

CELEBRATING HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

I have been fortunate to attend events throughout the District to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. I am proud to represent more than 400,000 individuals hailing from Mexico and Central and South America as Representative for California's 37th District, and I want to extend my warmest wishes for a joyous Hispanic Heritage Month. This is a time to honor the rich history, remarkable contributions, and resilience of the Latino community.
