A Message from Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove

Hi Friend,

This is Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove! I am proud to represent and serve YOU right here in California’s beautiful 37th Congressional District.

Welcome to July's edition of the LEAD Alert, my monthly recap on how I’m prioritizing Land and the Environment, Economic Justice, the Arts, and Democracy in Congress for CA-37 and beyond! If you’d like to receive all my updates, please subscribe to my e-newsletters HERE.

This July, I continued LEADing in the 37th both at home in Los Angeles and on Capitol Hill. From securing EPA grants for Southern California to fighting for equity in arts education, here’s a snapshot of what I did this month. ⬇️

SECURING CLIMATE JUSTICE FUNDING: I was proud to secure some major cash for climate and the environment this month!

The Los Angeles area will receive an expected $521.2 million through three grants from the Biden-Harris Administration’s Inflation Reduction Act. I recently joined the EPA in announcing a $499,997,415 Climate Pollution Reduction Grant to fund decarbonization efforts across Southern California, enabling our region to do our part to combat the climate crisis while keeping the air clean in our most vulnerable communities!

But that's not alltwo LA-based projects were selected for EPA Environmental Justice Community Change Grants! These projects will equip young Angelenos with the tools to fight the climate crisis through workforce development, leadership training, and community engagement initiatives. The futures of our planet and young people are intertwined, and these programs will play a vital role in empowering our youth to create a clean, sustainable future.

INVESTING IN EQUITABLE TRANSIT:

Thanks to the Biden-Harris administration’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Los Angeles is stepping up its transportation game! This month, I welcomed Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to celebrate a $139 million grant for LA Metro.

This funding will expand high-quality, affordable public transit, helping the region strengthen its infrastructure ahead of the 2028 Olympics while reconnecting communities torn apart or cut off by transportation projects of the past. I’ll keep fighting to ensure this investment continues to benefit Angelenos beyond the Games!

ENHANCING EQUITY IN ARTS EDUCATION: The arts play a central role in empowering and uplifting communities. However, years of funding cuts have jeopardized arts education programs across the country, disproportionately impacting people of color. That’s why I introduced the Equitable Arts Education Enhancement Act. This bill would create a grant program for Minority-Serving Institutions, ensuring that their programs remain robust and intact for current and future students.

HOSTING A FILM PRESENTATION TO CELEBRATE WNBA ATHLETES: I was honored to host a film presentation and panel alongside director Dawn Porter for her film “Power of the Dream,” a documentary chronicling the WNBA's Atlanta Dream and its work to support voting rights. This film reminds us of the importance of passing legislation to strengthen our democracy, like the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and is a great example of the arts’ ability to inspire action!

REPRESENTING THE U.S. AT THE P20 CONFERENCE IN BRAZIL: It’s critical for any democracy to ensure that women’s perspectives are heard and valued. I was honored to join fellow California Congresswoman Young Kim in bilateral discussions on uplifting women's voices around the world, especially on climate change and sustainable development issues. At a time when isolationism is on the rise at home and abroad, it was great to meet with so many trailblazing women legislators from across the globe to discuss how we can all work towards a better future.

HONORING REV. JAMES LAWSON: Rev. James Lawson, who passed away last month, was a key civil rights activist and a faith leader in our community for over two decades. I was proud to lead 22 Members of Congress in sending a letter to President Biden calling on him to posthumously award Rev. Lawson with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work to strengthen our democracy.

As always, I encourage you to contact my offices with any comments or concerns about my work in Congress, the 37th District, or any other matters. Please connect with me on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram to stay up to date on my work in Congress.
