Hi Friend,
This is Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove! I am proud to represent and serve YOU right here in California’s beautiful 37th Congressional District.
Welcome to September’s edition of the LEAD Alert, my monthly recap on how I’m prioritizing Land, Economic Justice, the Arts, and Democracy in Congress for CA-37 and beyond!
This September, I continued LEADing in the 37th both at home in Los Angeles and on Capitol Hill. From celebrating the arts to passing legislation out of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, here’s a snapshot of what I did this month. ⬇️

HOLDING BIG OIL ACCOUNTABLE: For decades, big oil companies have spread climate disinformation, targeted Black and Brown communities with pollution, and lobbied for corporate handouts. As Vice Ranking Member of the House Natural Resources Committee, I’m working to hold big oil accountable. This month, I organized a roundtable highlighting big oil’s extortion, collusion, and pollution with expert panelists to chart a path for a clean, affordable, and sustainable energy future.

ADVANCING NEW HOUSING DEVELOPMENTS: Addressing Los Angeles’ housing crisis demands an all-hands-on-deck approach. That’s why, in September, I convened a series of roundtables focused on the development of affordable housing in Los Angeles.
The first roundtable, co-hosted by our Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Regional Administrator, Jason Pu, brought housing developers together with local, state, and federal housing agencies to brainstorm innovative solutions to address challenges in the affordable housing development process. The second roundtable centered on the development of affordable housing on land owned by faith organizations following the enactment of California Senate Bill 4 (SB4), which permits faith institutions to build affordable housing on their property. It was crucial to bring these partners together to ensure that all developers—including faith organizations—can take advantage of the opportunities and resources available to them.

EDUCATION TELEPHONE TOWN HALL: Ensuring equitable economic outcomes for future generations starts with quality education for all. In September, I hosted an Education Telephone Town Hall with special guests Culver City Unified School District Superintendent Brian Lucas, Los Angeles Unified Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho, and U.S. Department of Education Awareness and Outreach Specialist Isaiah Ellis. You can listen to the audio here!
ADDRESSING ROOT CAUSES OF MIGRATION: Republicans’ dangerous rhetoric about immigration endangers our immigrant communities—the very communities that positively impact our economic prosperity. Last week, as a co-founder of the Global Migration Caucus, I introduced a new resolution calling for comprehensive legislation to address the root causes of forced migration and displacement while affirming the need for a true roadmap to citizenship for immigrants in the United States.

CONGRESSIONAL RECORD CONCERT: As a daughter of creatives who learned to play the alto saxophone in public school, I’m proud to be a strong voice for arts education in Congress. In September, I had the opportunity to literally raise my voice in support of funding for arts education by singing backup for Wiley Brown, the son of go-go icon Chuck Brown, at the Congressional Record concert. I will continue to advocate for increased funding for art education in our schools through legislation like my bill, the Equitable Arts Education Enhancement Act.

FUNDING CONVENING FOR ARTS AND CULTURE: In addition to adequately funding art education, we must also increase access to resources for our local artists and art organizations. Last month, I hosted an arts funding convening with National Endowment for the Arts Chair Maria Rosario Jackson to connect over 100 local artists and arts organizations with federal funding and resources. My work at art nonprofits taught me that those who aim to enrich our community through arts and culture sometimes lack the necessary resources to do so—I was proud to connect these artists and arts organizations with the resources they deserve.

FIGHTING FOR SEXUAL ABUSE SURVIVORS: All survivors of sexual abuse deserve support services that are within reach—especially incarcerated individuals, who are more at risk for experiencing abuse and dealing with the aftermath alone. Last month, I introduced the Sexual Abuse Services in Detention Act to protect incarcerated individuals from sexual abuse and ensure that they have access to the life-saving resources and support they need to heal.
SUMMIT OF THE AMERICAS ACT: In September, I celebrated the passage of the Summit of the Americas Act, my legislation with Reps. María Elvira Salazar (FL-27) and Joaquin Castro (TX-20), through the House Foreign Affairs Committee! This bill codifies the U.S.’s participation in the Summit of the Americas as well as the Cities Summit, two critical diplomatic forums that bring together leaders from across North America, South America, and the Caribbean. Our partnerships with the 48 countries in the Western Hemisphere are vital to promoting prosperity across our region, and I will keep working to get this bill across the finish line to strengthen these relationships.
