A Message from Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove

This is Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove! I am proud to represent and serve YOU right here in California’s beautiful 37th Congressional District.

Welcome to October’s edition of the LEAD Alert, my monthly recap on how I’m prioritizing Land, Economic Justice, the Arts, and Democracy in Congress for CA-37 and beyond!

This October, I continued LEADing in the 37th both at home in Los Angeles and on Capitol Hill. From hosting an immigration clinic to increasing housing and economic security in Los Angeles, here’s a snapshot of what I did this month. ⬇️

BUT FIRST:

LA COUNTY VOTING RESOURCES: Election day is Tuesday, November 5! LA County has polling locations open every day through election day from 10am to 7pm—find yours HERE. Not registered to vote? Don’t worry—you can register when you show up to vote in person.

If you’re voting by mail, make sure your ballot is postmarked or dropped off at a drop box or voting center by election day. More information about voting in LA County can be found HERE.

MILITARY SERVICE ACADEMY NOMINATIONS: Are you or a student you know interested in attending West Point, the Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy, and the Merchant Marine Academy? Each of these academies requires a Congressional nomination for admission. Constituents can apply for a nomination from my office now through November 11. To apply and learn more, click HERE.

PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT FROM PROJECT 2025: Project 2025 not only poses a grave threat to our democracy but to our planet as well. This month, I teamed up with Rep. Dan Goldman (NY-10), House Democrats, and experts for a video series spotlighting the devastating impacts Project 2025 would have across the board. As Vice Ranking Member of the House Natural Resources Committee, I'm working to expose how Project 2025 would exacerbate the climate crisis. Learn more about Republicans’ plot to put polluters over people and wreak havoc on our environment in the video below.

DRUG PRICING TOWN HALL: All too often, exorbitant prescription drug prices force seniors to decide between their health and paying for rent or groceries—this is unacceptable. In October, I co-hosted a drug pricing town hall for seniors with U.S. Secretary of Health & Human Services Xavier Becerra at the Culver City Senior Center to share progress the Biden-Harris Administration has made to lower prescription drug costs for seniors, including price caps on out-of-pocket costs at $2,000 a year and on insulin at $35 a month.

HOUSING FOR WOMEN AND AT-RISK YOUTH: In October, I was thrilled to present over $1.6 million to Butterfly’s Haven, a shared housing community serving women and at-risk youth, for its Youth Housing Project. This funding will enable Butterfly’s Haven to acquire an additional site to open a youth hub, workforce training center, and housing site, providing more young people with a safe place to call home, heal, and grow into the best versions of themselves. Through this year’s government funding process, I was able to secure $6.4 million to help address housing insecurity in Los Angeles!

INVESTING IN ARTS MENTORSHIP: In October, I presented SoLa Impact with $1 million for its new Art, Tech, and Entertainment Center serving youth in Crenshaw and Leimert Park. The state-of-the-art facility will feature a professional recording studio and event space to train and mentor the next generation of professionals in the arts, media and entertainment, tech, and live events. Take a look at the new site HERE!

INVESTING IN ANTI-RECIDIVISM AND COMMUNITY SAFETY: Keeping our communities safe is a top priority for me in Congress. In October, I delivered a total of $3.1 million to several local organizations working to uplift vulnerable community members, keep our communities safe, and reduce recidivism rates. The funding for Amity Foundation, CASA/LA, Brotherhood Crusade, and the Los Angeles Urban League will support services like mentorship, workforce development training, and court advocacy for at-risk community members.

IMPROVING IMMIGRATION SERVICES: As your Representative, I’m here to advocate for you and help you cut through the federal red tape, including immigration services. In October, I hosted U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) at my second annual immigration clinic for constituents, providing them the opportunity to engage directly with USCIS and receive important updates. The clinic also featured legal information sessions and a resource fair with representatives from the South Central Family Health Clinic and other local organizations.

I also introduced bipartisan legislation to help address our country’s outdated and duplicative visa application and processing systems. This legislation will save the State Department countless hours of labor and thousands of dollars in postage and paper by keeping federal communications about visa applications online, eliminating redundant paperwork and cutting wait times.
