A Message from Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove

Hi Friend,

This is Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove! I am proud to represent and serve YOU right here in California’s beautiful 37th Congressional District.

Welcome to November’s edition of the LEAD Alert, my monthly recap on how I’m prioritizing Land, Economic Justice, the Arts, and Democracy in Congress for CA-37 and beyond!

This November, I continued LEADing in the 37th both at home in Los Angeles and on Capitol Hill. From proposing prison sentencing reform to increasing sustainable housing opportunities for formerly unhoused people, here’s a snapshot of what I did last month.⬇️

BUT FIRST:

COVERED CALIFORNIA: An unexpected trip to the doctor or hospital can be costly without insurance. Covered California offers affordable plans for Californians—including DACA recipients—starting at just $10 a month! Enrollment is open now through January 31. To be covered starting January 1, enroll by Sunday, December 15!

Already covered? Make sure to renew your plan by December 15! To learn more, sign up, or renew your plan, visit coveredca.com.

PROTECTING OUR COASTAL WATERS: As Californians, we know the importance of maintaining the prosperity of our beaches. Offshore drilling harms our coastal communities and the ecology of our coasts. This month, I joined Reps. Frank Pallone (NJ-06) and Raúl Grijalva (AZ-07) in urging President Biden to permanently protect unleased and at-risk areas of the American coast from drilling. As Vice Ranking Member of the House Natural Resources Committee, I’ll keep fighting to protect our land and environment from harmful drilling.

PRISON SENTENCING REFORM: For too long, the justice system has blindly prioritized long, harsh sentencing over rehabilitation. That’s why I reintroduced the Second Look Act with Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ). This legislation would allow courts to resentence people who have been rehabilitated and are not a threat to public safety, reducing the prison population and saving taxpayer dollars. I’m committed to advancing criminal justice reform and seeing this bill through.

INVESTING IN SUPPORTIVE HOUSING: I was thrilled to present $1.8 million to Mayor Karen Bass and the City of Los Angeles for improvements to The Prentice permanent supportive housing site in downtown LA. This is just one of 15 community projects that I’ve secured a total of $12.4 million for this year. This funding is a critical investment in combating the housing crisis and providing safe, sustainable housing for our vulnerable community members.

CELEBRATING HISTORY, ART, AND CULTURE: Without culture, history, or art, the world would seem bleak and our cups would be half empty. This month, I had the opportunity to refill my cup by celebrating the grand opening of the new wing of Los Angeles County’s Natural History Museum, the NHM Commons. This passion project was envisioned to represent the authentic experiences of all Angelenos and speak truth to power through art. In Congress, I will continue to support our museums, the arts, and LA creatives.

ADVOCATING FOR SPORTS DIPLOMACY PUSH: Over the next ten years, several major international competitions will be hosted in the United States, including the LA 2028 Olympic Games and the World Cup. That’s why I led 53 bipartisan lawmakers, alongside House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (TX-10), in a letter urging State Department officials to put sports diplomacy at the forefront of our diplomatic strategy. These major sporting events provide unparalleled opportunities for advancing global cooperation, cultural exchange, and American leadership on the world stage.

LEGAL LENS INTERVIEW: In November, I joined KBLA’s Angela Reddock-Wright on The Legal Lens Show to unpack President-elect Trump’s cabinet picks and how House Democrats will continue prioritizing our constituents. Though many of us are still experiencing a range of emotions after November, I will continue to answer to your needs—the safety and well-being of each and every one of you is my number one priority. You can listen to the full podcast episode here.

As always, I encourage you to contact my offices with any comments or concerns about my work in Congress, the 37th District, or any other matters.
