Supporting our Immigrant Communities Amid Trump’s Cruel ICE Raids

A MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSWOMAN KAMLAGER-DOVE:

Since June 6th, Donald Trump’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been conducting a series of raids across Los Angeles, including here in California’s 37th Congressional District. These raids have taken place at local businesses and spaces integral to our communities—including an apparel shop in the Fashion District and a car wash in Culver City. Trump even sent federal immigration agents to Dodger Stadium.

I am deeply alarmed by reports that these raids and other immigration policies are racially profiling Angelenos, resulting in the detention of law-abiding asylum seekers, and even sweeping up U.S. citizens. I condemn these actions and stand in solidarity with our immigrant communities that make Los Angeles great. These are difficult and scary times, and my office is here to support you.

Immigrants are the backbone of our community and deserve dignity—not fearmongering, violence, and abuse. Despite Trump’s claims, these policies aren’t largely targeting “criminals.” Instead, they’re targeting hardworking Angelenos—our neighbors, our coworkers, and our friends. Trump is tearing apart families and entire communities, and I will not be silent.

Fighting Back:

I’ve been fighting back against these devastating, draconian immigration policies. This week, I conducted an oversight visit to the Adelanto ICE Processing Center to locate and check on the status of constituents who have been swept up in these raids. What I saw was horrifying—detainees going without meals for 14 hours and going without a change of clothes for 10 days. Worse, ICE was not able to confirm the locations of where some of my detained constituents are being held. I will keep demanding answers and better conditions.

I’m also fighting back in Congress against Trump and ICE’s deportation tactics and policies. Last week, the Trump Administration provided the personal data of immigrants enrolled in Medicaid to deportation officials, using individuals' personal health care data against them to hunt down immigrants. This is not only wrong—it is a clear violation of privacy, so I’m working on legislation to stop it. Additionally, I’m working alongside Rep. Dan Goldman (NY-10) to ban ICE agents from wearing masks that conceal their identities.

And last week, I stood alongside Mayor Bass and federal and state lawmakers in calling on Trump to end these raids and the militarization of Los Angeles. Trump’s policy of calling in the military to handle a situation already under the control of local law enforcement only sowed further chaos and tension in Los Angeles. Now that the Mayor’s curfew has been terminated, it’s past time for Trump to take the military out of LA.

Standing Up for Immigrant Communities:

While I was in Washington, D.C. voting against Republicans’ harmful policies last week, my office was supporting our immigrant communities. My team attended peaceful protests, including an interfaith protest, to provide constituent services and stand in solidarity with our immigrant neighbors. Additionally, my casework team brought together LA Congressional caseworkers and legal experts to discuss how we can best support our immigrant constituents during these difficult times.
