Earth Week Greetings – Connecting for a Sustainable Future

A MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSWOMAN KAMLAGER-DOVE:

Dear Friend,

As we celebrate Earth Week, I am delighted to reflect on some of the sustainability measures I’ve been working on in Congress. Ahead of Earth Day, I prioritized environmental issues by introducing a resolution to highlight the threat that climate change poses to young people’s futures, hosting an environmental justice funding convening and grants workshop to ensure historic funding through the Inflation Reduction Act flows equitably into our communities, and urging the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) to implement environmental reviews of offshore oil and gas projects. I am proud of these achievements and am eager to continue working to protect the environment in California’s 37th District and across the globe.

CLIMATE RESOLUTION

On Earth Day, I was pleased to introduce a resolution with Congresswoman Dina Titus (NV-01) to emphasize the disproportionate impact that climate change has on children and young people worldwide. Currently, children bear the brunt of climate impacts, with millions facing disrupted education due to extreme weather events. It’s clear that children and young people have the most to gain from global efforts to combat climate change and face the greatest risks from international inaction. On Earth Day, I was proud to renew my commitment to promoting a healthy planet and sustainable future for all children through this legislation.

ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE FUNDING CONVENING AND GRANTS WORKSHOP

On Friday, my office hosted our second annual environmental justice funding convening and grants workshop to raise awareness about the federal aid available to small businesses, organizations, and municipalities for environmental justice projects through President Biden and Congressional Democrats’ Inflation Reduction Act. We gathered with federal agencies and partners, including the Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Internal Revenue Service, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, to answer questions and provide information on securing federal funding. I was thrilled to see nearly 100 attendees join us to discuss equitable resource distribution, which is crucial for communities in South Los Angeles. In Congress, I will continue fighting to secure funding for these vital environmental justice initiatives.

NATURAL RESOURCES COMMITTEE WORK

On Thursday, I sent a letter to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management alongside Representatives Raul Grijalva (AZ-07), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14), and Jared Huffman (CA-02) to urge the agency to halt categorical exclusions for offshore oil and gas projects, which enable hundreds of these projects to proceed without undergoing environmental reviews. BOEM routinely grants exclusions, approving 90% of development plans and almost 25% of exploration plans without site-specific analysis between 2018 and 2022. This is unacceptable. I was proud to stand with my fellow Representatives in urging BOEM to take the necessary steps to prioritize our collective health, safety, and environment.

As always, I encourage you to contact my offices with any comments or concerns about my work in Congress, the 37th District, or any other matters. Please connect with me on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram to stay up to date on my work in Congress. If you are experiencing issues with Social Security, passports, immigration, or another Federal agency, send in a casework request, and my staff will be happy to assist you.

Sincerely,
