A Message from Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove

This is Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove! I am proud to represent and serve YOU right here in California’s beautiful 37th Congressional District.

Welcome to June's edition of the LEAD Alert, my monthly recap on how I’m prioritizing Land, Economic Justice, the Arts, and Democracy in Congress for CA-37 and beyond! If you’d like to receive all my updates, you can subscribe to my e-newsletters HERE.

This June, I continued LEADing in the 37th both at home in Los Angeles and on Capitol Hill. From celebrating Juneteenth to advocating for reproductive justice, here’s a snapshot of what I did this month. ⬇️

LAUNCHING THE SLOW FASHION CAUCUS: Did you know that fast fashion is a leading factor in climate change? Last week, I was proud to join Reps. Pingree (ME-01) and Glusenkamp Perez (WA-03) in launching Congress’ first-ever caucus dedicated to sustainability in fashion. The Slow Fashion Caucus will raise awareness around the environmental impacts of fast fashion and draft sensible policies to promote sustainability in the clothing, garment, and fashion industries.

FIGHTING FOR FOSTER YOUTH: It’s no surprise that foster children experience improved outcomes when under the care of relatives. This month, I reintroduced the Promoting Permanency Through Kinship Families Act, legislation that encourages kinship guardianship, foster, and adoptive placements to help keep families together and create the best environment for foster youth to learn, grow, and thrive.

PROMOTING DIPLOMACY THROUGH THE ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT: As an Angeleno and Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, I know the key role that Arts and Entertainment can play in American diplomacy. That’s why, in June, I introduced two amendments to uplift U.S. engagement with Africa by bolstering exchanges with African creatives and sports diplomacy. I was honored to join the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition’s panel on sports diplomacy to discuss sports’ important role in bridging cultural gaps through meaningful cultural exchange.

HONORING JERRY WEST AND BILL WALTON ON THE HOUSE FLOOR: Basketball legends Jerry West and Bill Walton were inspirations to many, especially here in Los Angeles. I was proud to honor their legacies on the House Floor this month.

CELEBRATING JUNETEENTH: Juneteenth, which commemorates the day that the last enslaved people in the United States learned about emancipation, is a day for celebration for all Americans, but especially Black Americans. The holiday is also an important reminder to continue working towards racial justice. In honor of Juneteenth, I introduced a resolution to honor, preserve, and ensure investment in former Freedmen’s Settlements—communities established by freed enslaved Americans following the abolition of slavery.

I was also excited to host a Juneteenth Book Reading at the Julian Dixon Library in Culver City. At a time when Black history is being suppressed in schools, it’s more important than ever for our children to learn about our shared past. In Congress, I will always push back against policies that would ban diverse books and censor representative curriculums.

FIGHTING FOR REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS: On the second anniversary of the disastrous Dobbs v. Jackson ruling, which overturned 50 years of precedent in Roe v. Wade, I joined advocates at Los Angeles City Hall to highlight the devastating impacts of this decision and demand federal action to restore reproductive freedom for all women.

I am committed to protecting our reproductive rights in Congress. This month, I voted against House Republicans’ National Defense Reauthorization Act and Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, which included extreme policies to restrict abortion access and impose bans on IVF and other fertility treatments. I will always fight back against cruel attempts to strip women of their fundamental right to control their own health, lives, and futures.
