Dear Neighbor,
From the dedication of the Jose G. Ramos Post Office in Whittier to our visit from Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh, it was an exciting week for our community here in Southern California.
In case you missed it, here is a quick update on some of our events from last week:
Celebrating the Jose G. Ramos Post Office
On Wednesday, April 20th, I held a ceremony to officially rename the Whittier Post Office as the Jose G. Ramos Post Office.
Sergeant Jose Ramos was a Purple Heart recipient, a tireless advocate for Vietnam veterans, and a pillar of our community. After his passing in 2017, I introduced legislation to rename the Whittier post office in his honor—which was signed into law by the President in 2019.
Renaming the Whittier post office after Jose Ramos is a small token of gratitude from this community and from our entire nation. I was proud to be joined by local veterans, members of the Ramos family, and many others who knew and loved Jose for this important event.
Delivering funding for community projects
Earlier this year, I secured federal funds for nine community projects in our area. Last week, I was proud to deliver checks for two very important projects in Santa Fe Springs and Whittier.
First, I was proud to deliver $500,000 to The Whole Child. This funding will be used to construct an interim housing facility and supportive services center in Santa Fe Springs—resources that will help families take a crucial first step away from homelessness.
After that, I highlighted the $450,000 the Whittier Public Library Foundation will receive to refurbish the library and expand its offerings for young learners.
These projects were specifically requested by community partners in the 38th District and I was proud to fight for every one of them. Click here to read more about this historic funding.
U.S. Secretary of Labor visits Southern California
Last Thursday, I was honored to host U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh during his visit to Southern California.
We met with workers, toured apprenticeship programs, and discussed ways to protect union jobs, working families, and our environment.
From the Southwest Carpenters to my fellow IBEW members and all our union brothers and sisters—this is a district full of fighters!
Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day
April 24th marks Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day. Each year, our community comes together at the Armenian Genocide Memorial in Montebello to remember and mourn the millions who lost their lives.
As a longtime advocate for our Armenian community, I have consistently fought for legislation to recognize the Armenian Genocide. I am proud that members of my staff were in attendance on Saturday, and I will continue working to prevent further violence and to protect the Armenian people in Artsakh and around the world.
I enjoyed seeing so many of you this past week and hearing directly from you about the issues that matter to you and your family.
As I head back to Washington, I am ready to keep up the fight.
Stay safe,
Linda T. Sánchez Member of Congress
