News from Congressman Derek Tran

Dear Friend,

As your representative in Congress, it is my honor to serve you and keep you informed about the important work happening in Washington and CA-45. This week, I’ve been busy meeting with local leaders, working with my colleagues on key legislation, and hearing directly from constituents. From veterans’ issues to concerns about our environment, your voices are helping to shape the priorities I pursue in Congress.

ImageThis week, I had the privilege of meeting with several key groups to discuss priorities that are critical to our district:

General James Mingus, Vice Chief of Staff of the Army: I had the honor of meeting with General Mingus to discuss Army priorities, readiness, and modernization. It was a privilege to receive the official seal of the Army, which I am proud to display in my office.

City of Los Alamitos: I met with city officials from Los Alamitos and other city leaders to learn more about their legislative and funding priorities for the year. I love working with our city leaders to make sure that our communities have the resources they need to thrive.

Wounded Warrior Project: I had a productive discussion with Walt Piatt, CEO of the Wounded Warrior Project, about legislative priorities to support our veterans and their families. Our veterans deserve the best care, and I’m committed to fighting for them in Washington.

Southeast Asian Resource Action Center (SEARAC): I met with SEARAC’s Executive Director to talk about the civil rights challenges facing the Southeast Asian refugee community in the U.S. I’m committed to advocating for policies that ensure all communities are treated with fairness and respect.

I continued to take action on issues that matter to our district and the country:

I signed on as an original co-sponsor of bipartisan legislation introduced by Reps. Grace Meng (D-NY) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) to expand SNAP eligibility for hot meals. This is a crucial step toward reducing food insecurity for families in need.

I signed a letter to federal agencies addressing the challenges facing small business contractors.

I also signed a letter to VA Secretary Doug Collins concerning President Trump’s executive order eliminating collective bargaining at the VA and other agencies. We must ensure that workers at the VA are treated with the respect they deserve.

I joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers to vote against a procedural rule that would have blocked Rep. Anna Paulina Luna’s measure to allow new parents to vote by proxy 12 weeks after their baby is born. If we want the needs of parents to be heard in Congress, we must make Congress more accessible to new parents.

Unfortunately, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA)chose to block all Congressional business instead making reasonable accommodations for new parents. Instead of returning back to business and working to reduce costs for American families, Speaker Mike Johnson canceled votes for the rest of the week after a bipartisan group of lawmakers voted against his attempt to block the proxy voting measure.

I received many concerns from constituents regarding the potential dismantling of the U.S. Department of Education. I went to public schools, I send my kids to public schools - I share your concerns. The Department oversees a budget of nearly $106 billion, funding programs that protect civil rights and support K-12 education, Pell Grants, special education, vocational job training, and student loan assistance. Cuts to this department would negatively impact disadvantaged and low-income students in our district, and I will continue fighting to ensure our children have access to the resources they need to succeed.

I’m proud to report that my office has already returned over $55,000 owed to constituents by securing Social Security benefits, processing tax refunds, and ensuring that the money that you earned stays in your pocket.

As we head into travel season, please be aware of passport processing times. Regular passport applications are taking 4 to 6 weeks, and expedited processing takes 2 to 3 weeks. If you need to apply for or renew a passport, I encourage you to plan ahead. For those traveling within the next two weeks, please complete a privacy release form on my website so we can assist you with expediting your application.

ImageIt’s been a busy week in our district! Last Friday, I was honored to speak and serve food to veterans at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3173 Annual Award Program.
Later in the weekend, I had the privilege of attending the City of Westminster’s American Vietnam War Veterans Day Recognition Ceremony. It was a special moment to honor our local veterans for their service.

On Sunday, I attended a briefing on upcoming major events in Los Angeles County, including the 2028 Olympic Games!  I was also proud to honor the 26th Anniversary of the Vietnam Library.
