Dear Friends- 

This week I proudly introduced landmark legislation to protect, enhance, and expand Social Security benefits.  The COVID pandemic has only underscored the importance of Social Security to millions of Americans.

We are lucky to have a President who calls Social Security “a sacred trust,” meaning a promise by the federal government to all Americans that if they pay into Social Security with each and every paycheck, the federal government will provide retirement, disability and dependent benefits when they need them.  Unfortunately, Congress has not kept that promise.  Five million seniors are living in poverty and more cannot make ends meet on Social Security.  Now is the time for Congress to act to improve benefits.

Social Security 2100: A Sacred Trust:

• Increases benefits across the board, because benefits haven’t been enhanced in more than 50 years,
• Ensures no one who has paid into the system all their lives retires into poverty,
• Improves the Cost-of-Living Adjustment to make sure it reflects seniors’ actual expenses,
• Gives a tax break to working seniors,
• And finally, for the millions of teachers and municipal workers, repeals the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset which unfairly reduces their Social Security benefits.
