Dear Friends-
I spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives because Congress needs to act now on Social Security. Improving this program is critical for our mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, neighbors, and friends. You can watch my remarks below.
In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King there is a “fierce urgency of now.” Millions of our fellow Americans cannot get by on Social Security even after paying into the program their entire lives. Because more Americans are retiring than paying into Social Security, the program needs to be strengthened and protected. For decades Republicans have tried to cut benefits and privatize this program that 65 million Americans depend on.
Workers in our country pay into Social Security with each and every paycheck, and it’s Congress’ job to ensure it’s there when Americans need it. I introduced Social Security 2100: A Sacred Trust to do just that, and you can learn more about it here. As Chairman of the Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee, I led a hearing to move this bill forward.
We will not stop fighting until Social Security is improved and protected for years to come. To follow what I’m working on both in Washington and in Connecticut, visit my Facebook page, follow me on Twitter, or follow me on Instagram.
