News from Representative Larson

Dear Friends,

This week marks 89 years since President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law, ensuring seniors can retire with dignity after a lifetime of hard work. On Wednesday, I visited the White House with Social Security Administration Commissioner Martin O’Malley and advocates from across the country to celebrate the program’s 89th anniversary. You can view my remarks below.

On Thursday, I welcomed Commissioner O’Malley to Hartford to meet with Social Security Administration (SSA) employees at the Hartford field office. House Republicans are currently advancing a funding bill that would cut their funding by $453 million, which would close Social Security field offices, extend wait times for retirement claims and customer service, and delay disability claims decisions. I am committed to ensuring SSA has the funding and staffing it needs to properly serve beneficiaries and will oppose these disastrous cuts, so they do not become law.

As 10,000 Baby Boomers a day become eligible for Social Security, Congress must act to enhance benefits, not cut them. I introduced the Social Security 2100 Act with nearly 200 of my Democratic colleagues to enhance benefits and extend the program’s solvency by heeding President Biden and Vice President Harris’ call to ‘scrap the cap’ on Americans making more than $400,000 a year. This will ensure the wealthy pay their fair share into Social Security throughout the year like everyone else. I held a forum in Blue Hills this week to discuss our plan and how it will strengthen Social Security.

I will keep fighting in Washington to ensure this program serves our nation for decades to come. To follow what I’m working on both in Washington and in Connecticut, visit my Facebook page, follow me on Twitter, or follow me on Instagram.
