Dear Friends,
Last night, House Republicans finally released their draft tax bill, which we are scheduled to consider in the Ways and Means Committee next week. As we expected, it outlines trillions in tax cuts for the wealthiest one percent, paid for by slashing programs like Medicaid and SNAP nutrition assistance. Their plan will make life harder for working families so billionaires like President Trump and Elon Musk can get a tax break. They don’t need a windfall from their government – they need to pay their fair share.
Under their plan:
- Nearly nine million Americans could lose their health insurance, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, including more than 130,000 Connecticut residents
- The 172,000 Connecticut households that receive SNAP could see their benefits reduced or eliminated
- Fewer students would be eligible for Pell Grants and income-driven student loan repayment plans
- The richest 0.1% of Americans could see an average annual tax cut of $314,266
This week, I joined my Democratic colleagues to try to force a vote on the Hands Off Medicaid and SNAP Act. Our bill would protect Medicaid and SNAP from being cut. We only need a handful of House Republicans to sign our discharge petition, which would bring the bill to the floor for a vote. Many rank-and-file Republicans have said they do not want to cut these programs. Now is their chance to stand up.
I’m prepared to do everything it takes to defeat this bad deal for the American people. Will you or a loved one be impacted by these cuts? I invite you to share your story with me HERE so my colleagues can hear directly from you when we consider this bill.
