Dear Friends,
It has always been President Trump’s number one priority to make his tax cuts for the wealthy permanent, and his ‘Big Bill’ that was just signed into law does exactly that. In fact, the tax cuts they passed would give the top 0.1% $309,000 in tax cuts next year, while someone making $50,000 would only see 67 cents a day. Every Democrat in both the House and Senate voted against it because it pays for those tax breaks by kicking millions of Americans off their health care and food assistance.
We should not be giving the wealthy a tax break they do not need on the backs of our nation’s children, elderly, disabled, and veterans. Here’s how it will impact Connecticut:
- 17 million Americans will lose their Medicaid or Affordable Care Act coverage, including 186,580 Connecticut residents.
- If you purchase a plan on the Access Health CT exchange, your household’s premiums are slated to go up by an average of $1,550 next year. Some households may see premium costs rise over $20,000 for the year.
- This bill slashes SNAP nutrition benefits by $186 billion. At least 34,000 Connecticut residents could see their assistance reduced or eliminated.
I visited Charter Oak Health Center in Hartford today with Governor Lamont and my colleagues to discuss what these cuts will mean for Connecticut. I am committed to working with state and local partners to do everything we can to protect access to health care and critical programs for residents in the years to come. Before the House voted on the Trump ‘Big Bill’ on Thursday, the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget released a report showing this bill will harm the solvency of Social Security. That means beneficiaries will see a 20% benefit cut in 2032 if no action is taken. I have put forward a plan to extend solvency, stop taxing Social Security, and enhance benefits by ensuring the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share into Social Security – just like everyone else. Congress must act to not only protect Social Security from cuts but enhance the program for the first time in more than 50 years.
As your representative in Congress, I remain committed to doing everything I can to hold this Administration accountable and protect your hard-earned benefits from cuts.
