Message from Delaware's Congresswoman

Dear Friend,

Welcome back to the McBride Memo, where I share five quick updates from the past week — perfect for your morning cup of coffee. With Congress in recess, this week’s memo might look a little different. But the work doesn’t stop!

1. One big thing: Remember last week when I told you about the Trump administration’s attempts to eliminate federal funding for the Delaware Manufacturing Extension Partnership? Well, after leading nearly 90 Congressional colleagues demanding the Trump administration reverse this abrupt and harmful decision, we learned our advocacy worked and the funding was renewed through the end of this fiscal year. This a huge win for Delaware manufacturers and nine other affected states. We’re not just defending this funding — we’re fighting to secure it for good. You can read my full statement on this development here.

2. Driving the news: It is hard to understate just how reckless and illegal this administration’s deportation “process” has been. We should all be concerned about the Trump Administration’s disregard for due process. The right to due process is a cornerstone of our democracy and legal system. It is critical that we stand against the erosion of Constitutional rights. Don’t let anyone tell you that we can’t secure our borders and uphold due process. Watch my full take here.

3. ICYMI: Last week, I voted against House Republicans’ disastrous budget resolution—a framework that would slash Medicaid by $880 billion, threatening care that 1 in 4 of our neighbors rely on. I have heard from many Delawareans about how life-threatening losing access to Medicaid would be for them and it is why I will continue to push back against the Trump administration’s efforts to gut these programs. For many Delawareans, Medicaid is the bridge between getting care and going without it. These stories remind us that Medicaid isn’t charity–it’s a promise we make to one another. Here is my statement on this attempt to gut essential healthcare coverage.

  • P.S. I have heard from a few constituents asking how Medicaid is being cut without being named in the Republicans’ budget framework, and I want to reshare my discussion of this very topic from a few weeks ago. TLDR: The Energy and Commerce Committee oversees Medicaid, Medicare, and CHIP. Since Medicaid makes up 93% of their discretionary spending, there’s no way to meet these cuts without gutting Medicaid.

4. Legislative priority: The Acting Commissioner of Social Security is planning to slash the Social Security workforce and shutter field offices. Gutting customer service is a backdoor benefit cut. When seniors can’t reach a caseworker—or when families lose access to a local office—the result is real harm. This week, I co-sponsored several bills to halt these harmful closures and ensure adequate staffing at Social Security offices. Social Security is the promise that follows a lifetime of hard work and the Trump-Musk plan to dismantle this program to pay for tax cuts for billionaires is not only cruel–it’s deeply out of step with the values of Delawareans. Read more here about the legislative action I am taking to defend Social Security for Delaware and beyond.

5. Our state of neighbors: I hope all those celebrating Easter this weekend have a wonderful holiday filled with time with their families and friends. To all those who celebrated Passover last weekend, I hope you had a sweet Passover. Here’s a quick roundup of my time with Delawareans and what’s top of mind for our state:

  • I was able to join the Boys and Girls Club of Delaware for their Youth of the Year event where we celebrated Delaware’s exemplary young leaders. Congratulations to Brandon Rogers of the Clarence Fraim Boys & Girls Club in Wilmington — Delaware’s Youth of the Year!
  • It was an honor to attend the Delaware National Guard’s deployment ceremony of the 101st PAD in support of the Kosovo Forces 35 Mission. Our state and the nation thank them and their families for their service, especially in this moment, as we work to protect our interests at home and abroad.
  • Recently, we gathered in Dover to celebrate Major General Michael Berry’s retirement. He has been a steadfast leader of the Delaware National Guard. It was an honor to join in celebrating his nearly 40 years of service – a true testament to his commitment to the Guard, to Delaware, and to our nation.
  • This week, my Constituent Advocate team hosted its first Mobile Office Hours in Dover! Thanks to all the Delawareans who stopped by to meet our team and get assistance in navigating federal agencies. If you weren’t able to make it on Wednesday, don’t worry! More are on the way soon! And in the meantime, you can always contact my office for assistance.
  • Finally, I’ve been hearing from folks across Delaware about the uncertainty created by the Trump administration’s reckless tariffs. Costs are up, savings are down and our small businesses are facing a cliff.
    • A Delaware business, Mountaire Farms, had their shipments of chickens banned by China.
    • Construction costs are spiking—housing prices in Delaware may rise by 34%, one of the highest increases in the country.
    • Delawareans who have saved and vested into their 401(k) their entire lives have just seen their retirement plan depleted by the reckless actions of the president.

It really is much easier to keep it brief when the House is out of session!

Stay in touch, and I'll do the same.

  • Service Academy Nominations: Our office is now accepting applications from Delaware students seeking nominations to our nation’s prestigious service academies! As a member of Congress, it is my honor to support these students in their efforts to serve our nation in uniform. The application deadline is October 15th and you can find more information on eligibility and application requirements here
  • Help navigating a federal agency: If you can't get an answer from a federal agency in a timely fashion, or if you feel you have been treated unfairly, our office may be able to help resolve a problem or get you the information you need. While we cannot guarantee you a favorable outcome, we will do our best to help you receive a fair and timely response to your problem. If you need help navigating a federal agency, please visit: mcbride.house.gov/services/help-federal-agency
  • Has Medicaid impacted your life? 1 in 4 Delawareans receive health care coverage from Medicaid. In Delaware, the federal government pays 60% of the cost of traditional Medicaid and 90% of the cost of Medicaid expansion. Our office is collecting stories from Delawareans about their access to Medicaid as Republicans in Congress continue to advance proposals to cut this life-saving program. Submit your story here.
  • Appropriations Requests
  • Scholarship Opportunity: the Sallie Mae Fund has partnered with Thurgood Marshall College Fund and is accepting applications for the 2025-26 Bridging the Dream Scholarship Programs.
