McBride Memo. 5 Quick Things from Delaware's Congresswoman

Dear Friend,

Welcome back to the McBride Memo—your weekly dispatch from my time in Delaware and D.C., perfect for your morning cup of coffee. We’ve got some important updates this week, from critical food assistance cuts to national gaslighting over the Big Ugly Bill. Here are five quick things:

1. One big thing: On Friday morning, I stood with Senator Coons and Senator Blunt Rochester, SNAP recipients, and Delaware’s frontline food leaders at the Food Bank of Delaware in Newark. Together, our courageous neighbors helped to sound the alarm on the devastating cuts to food assistance in the Congressional Republicans’ budget.

You have heard me time and again mention what this bill means: 37,000 Delawareans losing some or all of the SNAP benefits, schoolchildren losing access to meals, parents buried under paperwork, and millions in unfunded mandates for Delaware.

Bottomline: kids going hungry & billionaires getting breaks.

These are not just numbers. They are our neighbors. I won’t let this betrayal go unanswered or unchecked. You can read more here.

2. Driving the news: On the note of the Big Ugly Bill: Republicans in Congress are lying to the American people.

Their messaging around this “Big Beautiful Bill, ”claiming it protects Social Security or helps working families—is a cover-up for the cruelty baked into the fine print. Just this week, millions of Americans got emails from the Social Security Administration saying this bill will eliminate taxes on their benefits. That is false.

I joined MSNBC to break it down: this bill is a billionaire tax bailout paid for only in part by ripping care away from 17 million Americans. It is Trumpcare, plain and simple, and it will hurt Delaware every step of the way. Check out my conversation here.

3. ICYMI: Last week, I published an op-ed in the Delaware News Journal laying out exactly what this budget means for our state. We are facing deep cuts to Medicaid and SNAP. Threats to rural hospitals. Lost meals for children. Budgets are moral documents, and this one fails the test. You can read the full op-ed here.

4. Legislative priority: I don’t know about you, but I can’t imagine a morning without my cup of coffee. Unfortunately, that daily ritual may soon cost a lot more if coffee is hit with new tariffs. That’s why I joined my colleagues in urging this administration to exempt coffee from pending tariff measures.

Since nearly all of America’s coffee is imported, tariffs won’t help U.S. farmers or consumers. They’ll just make your espresso pricier and hurt the 2.2 million jobs supported by our coffee industry.

So whether you take it black, with cream and sugar, or in the form of a double-shot oat milk latte… know that we’re fighting to keep your coffee accessible, affordable, and delicious. Because with everything going on, we could all use the warm embrace of a cup o’ joe.

5. Our state of neighbors: This week I got to spend a lot of time in the greatest State in the Union. From celebrating the Fourth of July with friends, family, and neighbors to connecting with leaders across the state, it was a wonderful week spent in good company.

I got to visit GE Aerospace—where innovation meets national security. Their work is truly innovative and extraordinary. I have submitted a $45 million appropriations request to support this cutting-edge technology. With the right investment and a skilled workforce, we can build aircraft that shift seamlessly from supersonic to hypersonic speeds right in our backyard.

I also had the chance to speak with the Leadership Delaware Class of 2025 at the Chemours Discovery Hub. These 21 dynamic leaders are already shaping the future of our state, and hear about their ambitions.

Rep. McBride speaks at the Food Bank of Delaware.

Stay in touch, and I'll do the same.
