| Reining In Executive Power In Washington With The REINS Act |
|
|
This week in Washington, D.C, I was joined by 179 of my Republican colleagues in rolling out the REINS Act, a bill to reassert Congress' legislative authority and prevent excessive overreach by the executive branch in the federal rulemaking process. For far too long, unelected bureaucrats have been operating in the basements of Washington and making decisions on behalf of the American people. It's far past time we put the power back into the hands of the people, which is exactly what the REINS Act does.
Additionally, the House Committee on Energy and Commerce hit the ground running during its first week of roundtable discussions. This week, I had the opportunity to ask critical questions about Big Tech's role in facilitating the sale of illicit fentanyl to our nation's youth. Republicans are committed to creating a nation that's safe again, and it starts with holding these social media companies accountable.
With all that's happening this Congress, it is my greatest honor to represent you and hear from you about the issues that matter most. You can read below about what we've been up to this week, and as always, you can stay updated with us here, on our website, and on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. |

Congresswoman Kat Cammack Appointed To Serve On Select Subcommittee On The Weaponization Of The Federal Government

I'm excited to announce that this week, I was selected by Speaker McCarthy and Republican Leadership to serve on the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government this Congress.
Over the last two years of this administration, we've seen the unchecked growth of the federal bureaucracy and the unfettered power of the executive branch used against the American people. Whether it's the DOJ going after parents concerned about their children's education or the taxpayer funds that fueled research around COVID, we're equipped to return accountability and transparency to the American people. It's long past time we deliver the answers everyone deserves.
More to come soon as we hit the ground running. Read more here. |

Rep. Cammack Hosts Press Conference On REINS Act

On Wednesday, I hosted a press conference to mark the introduction of H.R. 277, the Regulations from the Executive In Need of Scrutiny Act of 2023 (REINS). The bill, which would reassert Congress' legislative authority and prevent excessive overreach by the executive branch in the federal rulemaking process, currently has 179 Republican cosponsors, making it one of the most popular bills so far this Congress.
The bill would require every new "major rule" proposed by federal agencies to be approved by both the House and Senate before going into effect. It would also preserve Congress' authority to disapprove of a "non-major rule" through a joint resolution.

H.R. 21, The Strategic Production Response Act

This week, White House Press Secretary KJP said "President Biden’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve releases are working to lower gas prices."
This is a complete falsehood. Strategic Petroleum Reserve releases do nothing to lower gas prices. H.R. 21, the Strategic Production Response Act, would unleash our abundant fossil fuel reserves and require the administration to replenish and maintain the necessary levels of the SPR.
Republicans are committed to reestablishing our energy dominance and unleashing the full capabilities of our domestic production. Learn more about H.R. 21 and the actions on the House Floor here. |

Rep. Cammack Speaks During Roundtable On Big Tech & The Fentanyl Crisis

On Wednesday, I asked witnesses during an E&C roundtable discussion about the role social media plays in facilitating drug sales, with distinct respect to fentanyl. Social media companies have been complicit in empowering drug traffickers by allowing them to use their platforms to distribute illicit substances.
First responders, like my husband Matt, have been witness to the way fentanyl is running rampant throughout our nation, and these social media companies must be held accountable for their role in this crisis.

Celebrating National School Choice Week

Happy National School Choice Week! School choice is a powerful tool that allows children to have an education that's best suited to their needs, and the Sunshine State is proud to support parents' rights in making that choice.
This Congress, House Republicans are working hard to deliver on our commitment to creating a future that’s built on freedom by supporting school choice everywhere. |

Meeting With Local Leaders From Columbia County

Last week, I had a great meeting with leaders from Columbia County, Florida. Columbia is one of the counties new to Florida's Third Congressional District, and we’re thrilled to represent them this Congress.
We discussed the latest projects coming to Columbia, critical infrastructure, and new opportunities for economic development in North Central Florida. As the year kicks off, we remain committed to serving our local counties to ensure our area remains the best in the Sunshine State to live, work, and play. |

Discussing Legislative Priorities With The 2A Advisory Council In Gainesville

Last week, I sat down with our 2A Advisory Council in Gainesville to discuss the latest on the DOJ's near-final rule regarding pistols with stabilizing braces and other current legislative priorities to protect our Second Amendment rights. The Second Amendment is an essential right that our founding fathers guaranteed to the people, and Republicans are working hard to make sure it shall not be infringed. |

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced on Tuesday which Republicans will serve on politically charged select subcommittees that will investigate the "weaponization" of the federal government and the origins of COVID-19. The House voted along party lines earlier this month to create the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government to investigate civil liberties issues and how the government and private companies collect and analyze information on Americans, according to the resolution establishing the panel.

Republican lawmakers proposed a bill to replace the income, payroll, and estate taxes with a national sales tax while abolishing the IRS. The Fair Tax Act, introduced by Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA), is an attempt to simplify the tax code and the tax collection system. Similar legislation was first proposed in 1999 by former Rep. John Linder (R-GA); the current iteration of the bill is also sponsored by House Freedom Caucus Chair Scott Perry (R-PA), as well as lawmakers such as Rep. Bob Good (R-VA), Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-SC), Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), and Rep. Kat Cammack (R-FL).
