| TikTok Takes Center Stage During House Energy & Commerce Committee Hearing On National Security & Data Privacy |
|
|
This week, I joined my colleagues on the House Energy and Commerce Committee to press TikTok CEO Shou Chew about the app's consumer privacy and data security practices and its relationship with the Chinese Communist Party. I presented him with a video that a TikTok user posted depicting violence and a direct death threat to Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers, to which his app's own 'Community Guidelines' failed to remove from the platform.
If this hearing made one thing clear, it's that TikTok can't be trusted to protect the safety of 130M+ Americans, let alone one person. My colleagues and I are working hard to ensure that Americans are safe from the threat of the CCP, and addressing the concerns around TikTok is a major step in protecting our national security and data privacy.
With all that's happening this Congress, it is my greatest honor to represent you and hear from you about the issues that matter most. You can read below about what we've been up to this week, and as always, you can stay up to date with us here, on our website, and on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. |

Rep. Cammack Slams TikTok CEO During House Energy & Commerce Committee Hearing On Security & Data Privacy

This week, the House Energy and Commerce Committee questioned TikTok CEO Shou Chew about the platform's consumer privacy and data security practices, its impact on children, and its relationship with the Chinese Communist Party. The CCP's ties to the ByteDance-owned app are more than just a national security threat to the United States—they're a threat to every single American.
Despite TikTok's own 'Community Guidelines' which commit to protecting public safety from violent extremism, the entire House Energy & Commerce Committee was threatened on this app just WEEKS ago. Yet, unsurprisingly, TikTok did nothing to block those posts or the user who created them.

H.R. 5, The Parents Bill Of Rights, Passes U.S. House of Representatives

Today, H.R. 5—the Parents Bill of Rights—passed the U.S. House of Representatives. This legislation is a huge win for every mom, every dad, and most importantly, every student in America, because it establishes five key pillars to ensure that parents have the right to have a voice in their kids' education:
1. The right to know what's being taught in schools and to see reading material; 2. The right to be heard; 3. The right to see school budget and spending; 4. The right to protect their child's privacy; and 5. The right to be updated on any violent activity at school.
I was proud to vote YES on this bill today.

Speaking To Spring Interns On Capitol Hill About My Journey To Congress

Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to speak to some of our spring interns on Capitol Hill! I shared with them my personal story and journey to the House of Representatives, as well as how they can make the most of their congressional internships. It's always great getting to speak with the next generation of young, conservative leaders.
If you know of a college (D.C., Gainesville) or high school (Gainesville) student who’s looking for a summer internship, our office is now accepting applications!

As a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, I’m always eager to learn more about the issues impacting our businesses and retailers in Florida's Third.

This week, I joined Mornings With Maria ahead the Energy & Commerce Committee hearing with TikTok CEO Shou Chew. More 'Kat In The News' |
Rep. Kat Cammack (R-FL) pressed TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew during a congressional hearing Thursday on the fact that TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, has access to data of the millions of Americans who use the popular app.
Cammack pointedly asked Chew during the House Energy and Commerce Committee hearing, “My colleague Rep. [Bob] Latta confirmed that your parent company ByteDance currently can access user data, yes?” “Let’s— we have to be more specific,” Chew replied. “Yes?” Cammack asked again. “After Project Texas, no,” Chew said, in reference to the heavily scrutinized initiative that, according to Chew, would essentially create a firewall that shields TikTok user data from Chinese access.

China is stealing Americans' information via TikTok and using it for national security purposes, and the app is harming young children in the process, said Rep. Kat Cammack, R-Fla.
"Believe me, there is nothing secure about TikTok. We have done incredible research in really identifying the ways in which they are actively using a behavioral algorithm that is not like Meta, where you pick the things that you like and then you see that content through a TikTok experience."
