Week of June 12, 2023
The REINS Act Passes The U.S. House

This week, H.R. 277—the REINS Act—passed the House! This landmark piece of legislation I've championed for the last three years limits the executive bureaucracy and returns legislative authority to We, The People. You can read more about the bill and watch several videos below.

The Levy County Safety Patrol visited Washington during their annual safety patrol trip, the University of Florida's Albert and Alberta visited the Capitol for Gator Day, and some of the Air Force Thunderbirds pilots took a detour from a show in Ocean City to meet Members of the Bipartisan Women's Caucus. Take a look at some of the highlights later in the newsletter.

We continue to mourn the loss of City of Jasper's Police Chief Tony Rickerson. We hope you'll join us in keeping his family, colleagues, and the Hamilton County community in your prayers as memorial services get underway this weekend.

Finally, we wish all of our fathers, grandfathers, step-fathers, and father figures a very Happy Father's Day this Sunday! We hope everyone enjoys the opportunity to spend time with the special men in their lives.

With all that's happening this Congress, it is my greatest honor to represent you and hear from you about the issues that matter most. You can read below about what we've been up to this week, and as always, you can stay up to date with us here, on our website, and on TwitterFacebookInstagram, and YouTube.

Passing The REINS Act Through The U.S. House

Image

Big news alert! My bill—the REINS Act—has just passed the House! This bill is the largest regulatory reform effort in American history!

This bill reins in executive overreach, limits the expanding federal bureaucracy, and returns power to the people by ensuring elected representatives are accountable to the people and their constituents by ensuring Congress makes the laws, not the federal agencies.

Currently the Federal Register with all the regulations on the books is 90,000 pages. These boxes shown above hold 90,000 pieces of paper!

You can read more about the bill here, or watch the Facebook Live about the bill above.

Talking About The REINS Act On The House Floor

Image

Whether you call it the "American Dream-Killer" or the "fourth branch of government," the rampant government overreach by the regulatory regime must end. I spoke on the House Floor before the vote this week to talk about the bill and what it will mean for the American people, small businesses, and our economy.

Supporting Farmers With Block Grant Assistance

Image

Hurricane Ian impacted more than 375,000 acres of citrus groves costing nearly $675 million in damages to the industry. More than 90 percent of all Florida citrus production was impacted by tropical storms in 2022. In December of last year, Congress appropriated $3.7 billion to address agricultural losses from hurricanes and other natural disasters. However, to date, no citrus grower has received any of the agricultural disaster relief funds.

The bill we discussed on the House Floor would help our growers recover from natural disasters by allowing the USDA Secretary to efficiently deploy funds already appropriated by Congress.

Hosting Levy County Safety Patrol

Image

This week in Washington, it was Levy County Safety Patrol's turn to visit Washington, D.C. for their annual trip! Over 190 students, parents, and chaperones made the trek from North Central Florida to visit the U.S. Capitol, the monuments, museums, and other important historical sites in the city. Of course, I had the opportunity to meet them on Tuesday morning for their official portrait at the Ulysses S. Grant Statue.

It's an honor to have our students from Levy in town, and I hope to see even more students and their families over the summer! As always, our office can help to make your visit to Washington, D.C. the best it can be! Please reach out to us at (202) 225-5744.

University Of Florida Gator Day

Image

Tuesday was the University of Florida Gator Day on Capitol Hill and I showed Albert and Alberta around the halls of Congress—from the steps of the Capitol to the Speaker's Balcony, Statuary Hall, and beyond!

It's great to be a Florida Gator and to represent the Gator Nation in Congress! Go Gators!

United States Air Force Thunderbirds Visit Capitol Hill

Image

This week, we had the opportunity to meet and talk to some of our U.S. Air Force Thunderbird pilots today! This group of women are some of our nation's best and it was so nice to borrow them from their posts in Nevada to show them around the Capitol and welcome them to Washington! Some of them visited for their first time in D.C.—it was an honor to host them!

Remembering Jasper Police Chief Tony Rickerson

Image

This week we tragically lost Jasper Chief of Police Tony Rickerson. Chief Rickerson was a dedicated public servant, serving as chief since September of last year after his time as interim chief. He worked hard to keep the City of Jasper and its residents safe, while also being a loving husband and father to his wife and three children.

Team Kat sends our deepest condolences to Chief Rickerson's family, friends, and colleagues. We vow to honor his legacy and his memory as we mourn his loss.
