Week of November 6, 2023
Honoring Our Veterans

Dear Neighbor,

This week was a busy one in Washington, D.C. As we prepare to honor our veterans before Veterans Day this weekend, we focused on several important issues central to our veteran community in North Central Florida.

I sent a letter to Sunshine Health Network Director David Isaacks to inquire about the wait times veterans across our region have been experiencing at VA facilities. We learned that some veterans are often forced to wait 30 days or more to access important care and health appointments. Our heroes deserve the very best and I will always fight to make sure they receive the care they have earned.

While on a tour of the Capitol with some constituents this week, we ran into Speaker of the House Mike Johnson! He was on his way back to his office in between meetings and it was a pleasure introducing hometown folks to the top leader in the People's House. You can see the photo from this visit below.

Back home in North Central Florida, Gator Nation's very own Ben Sasse was inaugurated as the University of Florida's 13th president! While he has been serving in this role for over a year, it's great to see this Gator formally recognized! Congratulations, President Sasse—we look forward to continuing to work together.

To our veterans, we thank you for all that you have sacrificed to protect the United States. Florida is home to over 1.3 million veterans, making this day all the more important. This Veterans Day, we honor you.

Finally, happy 248th birthday to the United States Marine Corps! As the Few, the Proud, we thank you for your service.

With all that's happening this Congress, it is my greatest honor to represent you and hear from you about the issues that matter most. You can read below about what we've been up to this week, and as always, you can stay up to date with us here, on our website, and on TwitterFacebookInstagram, and YouTube.

For the Republic,

It's not everyday you run into Speaker Johnson while stopping to share some history in Statuary Hall in the Capitol! We met constituents from Florida's Third when the Speaker was on his way to another meeting.

Wait Times In VA Health Facilities

Image

Last week I sent a letter to the VA Sunshine Healthcare Network Director, David Isaacks, urging him to ensure the prompt delivery of health care to our veterans in Florida. Across the Sunshine State, former servicemembers are often having to wait well in excess of 30 days for medical appointments in several areas of practice. I look forward to working with Mr. Isaacks to reduce these wait times and make sure our veteran heroes receive the timely and high-quality health care they deserve.

Beware Of Fraudulent Individuals Filing VA Claims

Image

It's come to our attention that numerous unaccredited individuals in North Central and Northeast Florida are presenting themselves as licensed officials authorized to assist with VA claims. Visiting folks in nursing homes and assisted living facilities, these fraudsters are taking advantage of veterans and seniors with false information.

Veterans or survivors seeking to file claims with the VA should do so through an accredited representative, including a service agency, claims agent, or attorney recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs. These individuals are certified by the VA and have the proper training necessary to assist our heroes.

To see a full list of accredited individuals and organizations authorized to assist in the preparation, presentation, and prosecution of VA claims, click here. Please also feel free to reach out to our Gainesville office at (352) 505-0838.

This past week, we celebrated the formal inauguration of President Ben Sasse as the University of Florida's 13th president. We are grateful to have President Sasse at the helm.

We're sure he'll leave his mark on the university and the Gainesville community as he continues to lead the Gators to more success in the years ahead. He's been here for a while, but we're pleased to officially welcome him to Gator Nation.
