May 2024 Veterans' Resource Newsletter

Dear Neighbor,

Our team is passionate about being your voice on behalf of federal agencies. Unfortunately, there are a variety of factors controlling the dialogue and making it difficult for veterans' voices to be heard at the national level.

When we work on cases on your behalf, we don't let up on the issues until we receive responses. In some cases, however, there are statutory reasons for these agencies' decisions, and we do our best to push for favorable decisions. Agencies also maintain records systems, and as a requirement of the Privacy Act of 1974, governmental entities cannot disclose a record about an individual absent the individual's written consent. As part of our process, we require a form that allows us to pursue your case. When you get in touch with us, we'll hear from you about the resolution you seek and problems you're experiencing.

To get in touch with us, please contact our Gainesville District Office at (352) 505-0838 and ask to speak with a caseworker.

We look forward to serving you.

With all that's happening this Congress, it is my greatest honor to represent you and hear from you about the issues that matter most. You can read below about what we've been up to, and as always, you can stay up to date with us here, on our website, and on XFacebookInstagram, and YouTube.

For the Republic,

Fraudulent Nursing Diploma Scheme Leads to Federal Convictions

Image

Gail Russ, registrar of the Palm Beach School of Nursing in Lake Worth, Florida, Cassandre Jean, owner and operator of Success Nursing Review in Brooklyn, New York, and Vilaire Duroseau, owner and operator of the Center for Advance Training and Studies in West Orange, New Jersey, were found guilty of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud charges.

The defendants were charged, along with 11 co-defendants, for their involvement in a scheme to sell fraudulent nursing degree diplomas and transcripts obtained from two private nursing schools in Palm Beach County, Florida. The bogus diplomas and transcripts qualified purchasers to sit for the national nursing board exam and, after passing it, to obtain licenses and jobs in various states as registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and vocational nurses.

The overall scheme involved the distribution of more than 7,600 fake nursing diplomas. The VA OIG, the FBI, HHS-OIG, and the Homeland Security Investigations investigated this case.

Learn More About Retirement Shared Services Office & Military Service Deposit

Image

The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Retirement Shared Services Office (RSSO) conducts retirement and military service deposit seminars quarterly for VHA employees and each local Human Resources Office covers the Military Service Deposit (MSD) during new employee orientation.

Information pertaining to MSD can be found on the Workforce Management and Consulting HR Hub, which is an internal platform available to VHA employees. Additionally, VHA employees can request assistance via an electronic submission to RSSO or they may contact RSSO via phone at 1-866-330-7366, Monday through Friday, from 7:30 am – 4:30 pm CT. RSSO strongly encourages employees to begin their MSD early in their career to ensure a smooth transition to retirement, as it may take up to six months to complete an MSD package.

NOTE: Other federal agencies have a similar infrastructure in place. We encourage veterans who are enrolled in this program and working for other agencies that they check with their Human Resources department for additional information.
