Week of May 6, 2024
Heading Toward A Farm Bill

Dear Neighbor,

This week was another busy one in Washington, D.C. with lots of meetings, hearings, and visits with constituents in town from Florida. Read below to see what Team Kat has on tap.

Over the several years, the House Agriculture Committee has been working on the newest Farm Bill. At long last, the text for the legislation is set to be released in the next two weeks. For our farmers, ranchers, and producers in the Sunshine State, we have a lot on the line with necessary updates to important programs that support our commodities. We'll share more about the bill as it is unveiled and look forward to sharing with you the details around the key changes.

This week we also saw continued protests at college campuses across the country, with Columbia University announcing canceled commencement activities. I spoke with several outlets this week to express my disappointment for the students who only wanted to celebrate their big educational milestones, only to have their moment ruined by students who could not follow the rules. I, once again, remain proud of the University of Florida and its response to protecting free speech and Jewish students on campus.

We had several constituent groups in town this week. As safety patrol trips prepare to make the long drive to Washington to celebrate their hard work this academic year, we hope to see many more folks in Washington over the next several months. If you're interested in tours of the U.S Capitol, White House, Library of Congress, Smithsonian Museums, and more, make sure to give us a call in our D.C. office at (202) 225-5744.

Finally, we hosted our Service Academy Day this past weekend. If you weren't able to make it in-person to our event in Ocala, you can catch up on what you missed by calling us in Gainesville at (352) 505-0838.

Next week is the third of four straight D.C. weeks, so there's more to come. Keep up with us in next week's newsletter to see what's next!

With all that's happening this Congress, it is my greatest honor to represent you and hear from you about the issues that matter most. You can read below about what we've been up to this week, and as always, you can stay up to date with us here, on our website, and on XFacebookInstagram, and YouTube.

For the Republic,

The Florida Fire Chiefs Visit Washington

Image

Florida's fire chiefs were in town recentlly! Harold Theus, Alachua County Fire Rescue's own fire chief, was part of the visiting group at the Capitol. As a fire wife myself, it's always great to see the leaders of our departments who work so hard to keep our communities safe and prepared. It always nice when they bring a little Florida sunshine with them, too!

National Fentanyl Awareness Day

Image

This week on May 7, we observed National Fentanyl Awareness Day.

Earlier this year, I invited Ed Bravo, a constituent of Florida's Third, to the State of the Union. He lost his daughter to fentanyl several years ago.

More than 150 Americans die each day due to fentanyl poisoning. We have to stop the flow of these illicit drugs across our southern border.

Association of Equipment Manufacturers' Agriculture On The Mall

Image

I joined my colleagues on the House Agriculture Committee for the Association of Equipment Manufacturers' Ag On The Mall event this week! We learned more about the emerging technologies that support our farmers, ranchers, and producers. From seed-and-spray machines to tractors, combines, and artificial intelligence technology, there are lots of exciting things on the horizon to help our producers nationwide.

This is a tremendous event that happens each year—if you happen to be in Washington over the next week, it's worth it to stop by.

Annual Service Academy Day

Image

This past weekend we hosted our Annual Service Academy Day at Trinity Catholic School in Ocala! We had over two dozen students and their families in attendance to learn more about the military academy nomination process and to hear from current servicemembers about their experiences at West Point, the Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, etc.

We look forward to seeing the applications for these outstanding young men and women later this year. With questions or if you missed the presentation, give us a call in Gainesville at (352) 505-0838.

Thanking Our Public Safety Telecommunicators

Image

I had the honor of joining Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods and the hardworking team of Marion's public safety telecommunicators for their annual banquet in Ocala. National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week happens each April and recognizes the men and women who serve our communities as dispatchers and telecommunicators, supporting our law enforcement officers and citizens when we need them most.

It was great to recognize them for all of their hard work and to show our appreciation for their service with a night all about them. Please join me in thanking them for their hard work and service.

Employers Stand Up For What's Right, Refusing To Hire Protesters

Image

I joined Liz MacDonald on the Evening Edit to react to the news that 13 federal judges signed a letter vowing not to hire any of the protesters at Columbia University. After Americans watched these vile protests unfold over the last several weeks, it's clear these students won't be heading to the office for their first jobs this summer.

Antisemitism Spreading Across American Universities & Division Among The Democratic Party

Image

This week I joined Harris Faulkner on the Faulkner Focus to discuss the breakup of the anti-Israel protests at universities across the country. New footage from some of the campus protests caught students and other professional agitators declaring their admiration for North Korea. If you don't believe that, take a look.
