Week of May 20, 2024
The Farm Bill Heads To The House Floor

Dear Neighbor,

This week ends the final of four straight weeks of the House in session. I'm certainly looking forward to getting back to Florida after this long stretch in D.C.

Yesterday was a monumental day in the House, as the House Agriculture Committee passed the 2024 Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2024, also known as the 2024 Farm Bill. This bill has been years in the making and the product of many rounds of feedback with farmers, ranchers, and producers from across the country.

You may recall last spring when House Agriculture Committee visited Gainesville for a Farm Bill listening session. This was one of more than four-dozen visits across the country by committee leaders and members to solicit feedback from the very men and women who feed, clothe, and fuel our nation. To those who joined us for that big event last April, know that all of your hard work and efforts were incorporated into the bill we considered late into the morning this morning after nearly 15 hours of consideration.

The bill includes a number of significant wins for Florida's farmers, ranchers, and producers, including a base acre update, commodity price increases, specialty crop programs and research, and more. To see everything I helped to secure for Florida in the Farm Bill, click here

Finally, as we head into this long weekend, may we remember the real reason for Memorial Day and remember the lives of the men and women who sacrificed so much for our nation. We truly are the land of the free because of the brave.

I wish you and your loved ones a great weekend ahead, and I look forward to sharing more about our in-district adventures next week.

With all that's happening this Congress, it is my greatest honor to represent you and hear from you about the issues that matter most. You can read below about what we've been up to this week, and as always, you can stay up to date with us here, on our website, and on XFacebookInstagram, and YouTube.

For the Republic,

Memorial Day Monday

Image

On Monday we mark Memorial Day, a sacred day to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation.

Memorial Day is an important one for all of us, not because it's the unofficial start to summer, an extra day off of work, or an excuse for a backyard barbecue, but because it recognizes the importance of our hard-fought freedoms and those willing to sacrifice their lives so we can be free.

May you enjoy the weekend with friends and family and remember the reason for Monday.

Passing The 2024 Farm Bill Out Of Committee

Image

Yesterday was the big day—the markup for our 2024 Farm Bill!

After years working on the legislative text for this package, we marked up a bipartisan bill that reflects the majority of the priorities of our Florida producers, including specialty crop research initiatives, specialty crop block grants authorities, AGI waivers for conservation and disaster programs, a voluntary base acre update, and the designation of minerals central to agricultural production like phosphate and potash. This bill is a major win, not just for Florida, but for farmers, ranchers, and producers across the country.

Working Late For Our Farmers

Image

We were up late last night working on the all-important Farm Bill! We worked on this bill, which will head to the House Floor.

This bill only happens every five years, which means it’s even more important to get it right. Florida farmers, ranchers, producers, and consumers are big winners in this bill! This is just one step of many but this has been a ton of work in the making. Our farmers and ranchers deserve our support and respect and this bill does just that.

26th Annual Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Women's Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery

Image

On Wednesday, I led the 26th Annual Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Women's Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. This event, sponsored by the Women's Caucus, annually recognizes six outstanding servicewomen from the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard ahead of Memorial Day. The event is an important reminder of women's contributions to our military and our national security.

Thank you to the incredible women of our military for all you do to support our nation and keep us safe. We are forever indebted to you and your families for your service. We're already looking forward to another great event next year.

The Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association (FNGLA) team was in town last week to meet with the Florida delegation to discuss the Farm Bill markup, seasonal labor programs in the Sunshine State, and overall support for this industry that employs thousands of people statewide.

Thank you for stopping by to visit!
