Week of June 3, 2024
Marking The 80th Anniversary Of D-Day

Dear Neighbor,

This week marked the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Marking this special anniversary reminds us of the sacrifices of the brave Americans and other Allied troops as they stormed the beaches of Normandy to force a turning point in World War II. I am incredibly thankful for the Greatest Generation and their courage in the face of overwhelming evil. If you haven't had a chance to take a look at some of the coverage from the ceremonies in France this week, I recommend taking some time to view.

Back home, it was a busy week for Team Kat, with events across our 12 counties. In Gainesville, the Korean Baptist Church of Gainesville hosted an event with Korean War veterans to honor the friendship between the U.S. and South Korea since the war. Our Director of Veterans and Military Affairs, Dave, attended and presented a special congressional recognition for the event.

In Ocala, our Economic Development Coordinator, Jeannie, celebrated the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new RV park at the Southeastern Livestock Pavilion. Check out some of the photos below.

Finally, with Atlantic Hurricane Season in full swing, one of Florida's two annual sales tax holidays is going on now for hurricane preparedness supplies. If you're in need of new items for that storm preparedness checklist, now's your time to stock up. The event runs now through next Friday, June 14.

The House is back next week for more business and the Congressional Baseball Game! Stay tuned in next week's edition for the latest.

With all that's happening this Congress, it is my greatest honor to represent you and hear from you about the issues that matter most. You can read below about what we've been up to this week, and as always, you can stay up to date with us here, on our website, and on XFacebookInstagram, and YouTube.

For the Republic,

80th Anniversary Of D-Day

Image

Thursday marked 80 years since the invasion of Normandy on D-Day in 1944. The sunrise on June 6 brought with it wave after wave of landing vessels, carrying the more than 150,000 American, British, Canadian, and French ground troops who stormed some fifty miles of coastline.

Nightfall on D-Day found Allied forces past the German defenses on all five beachheads after tremendous setbacks and fierce fighting from the Germans. At last, Hitler's vaunted Atlantic Wall lasted less than twenty-four hours.

Thanks to the extraordinary bravery of American men that day, the incredible feat marked a definitive turning point in World War II.

Columbia Livestock Auction Market

Image

I recently had the opportunity to visit the Columbia Livestock Auction Market of Lake City! I spoke with local buyers and sellers and toured the facility before the sale got underway. Livestock are an important part of Florida's economy and an integral part of our regional commerce in our area.

We're grateful to the team and Mr. John Willis for having us!

Korean War Veterans Event In Gainesville

This weekend, our Director of Veterans and Military Affairs, Dave, spoke at the Korean Baptist Church of Gainesville's Korean War Veterans' event. He presented a special congressional recognition for the church's efforts to celebrate the friendship between the U.S. and South Korea since the war. The ceremony featured traditional Korean cultural performances, cuisine, and art, hosting local Korean War veterans who are active in the community.

Thank you to the Korean Baptist Church of Gainesville for hosting this important event and inviting us to participate.

SELP RV Park Opens In Ocala

Image

Team Kat helped to celebrate the ribbon-cutting of the Southeastern Livestock Pavilion's brand new RV campground! The 66-site park will allow more event holders, participants, and attendees to stay on-site during multi-day events.

This is a long-time project for the region and acknowledges the growth of our area and the need for more amenities to support SELP's tremendous capacity. We're excited to watch as folks enjoy this new recreational opportunity.

Hurricane Season Is Around The Corner

As Floridians, we know Atlantic Hurricane Season all too well. This month, we're in primetime hurricane season, and NOAA predicts this year could be a busy one for tropical activity due to La Niña and above-average water temperatures.

Now's the time to get prepared with updating your emergency plans, packing your hurricane kit, and signing up for the very important alerts provided by local news stations and the National Weather Service. You can view our full list of important hurricane tips on our website here.
