Week of July 22, 2024
Closing Out Legislative Business Before August Recess

Dear Neighbor,

I always say each week is a busy week on Capitol Hill and this week was certainly no exception. This week, I questioned bureaucrats on overspending, attended Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's address to Congress, and introduced legislation to protect IVF for families wanting to conceive.

In the Energy & Commerce Committee this week, I questioned senior management from the Consumer Product Safety Commission about their documented fiscal lies. You wouldn't believe this, but they were unable to answer my line of questioning. Watch the video here.

On Wednesday, I had the distinct privilege of attending Prime Minister Netanyahu's address to Congress. The acts of terrorism Hamas has committed against Israel are horrific. While Netanyahu spoke, just down the street there were thousands of Pro-Hamas sympathizers burning the American flag and flying the Palestinian flag atop the poles in front of Union Station. I consistently offer to purchase the protesters one-way tickets to Gaza because they love it so much. The offer stands for any pro-Hamas protesters who want to see the stark differences between Palestine and the United States.

On Thursday, I joined Senator Scott in introducing the Increasing Value for Families (IVF) with HSAs Act! This will help individuals and families better plan and pay for medical expenses, like in vitro fertilization (IVF), by decoupling Health Savings Accounts (HSA) from high-deductible health plans, and doubling the current contribution limits on HSAs from $4,300 to $8,600 for individuals and $8,550 to $17,100 for families. You can read more about the legislation below.

Ahead of this weekend's Olympic Games kickoff in Paris, we're congratulating two of Florida's Third's own—Tamari Davis and Caeleb Dressel. Please join us in cheering them on with Team USA and read more about them later in the newsletter!

Finally, TIME Magazine ranked the World Equestrian Center as one of the World's Greatest Places of 2024! Florida's Third is so lucky to have this incredible equestrian and multidisciplinary event venue in our backyard. I have no doubt that it will make many future appearances on this list.

The House heads into August recess starting Monday. For the next six or so weeks, we'll be back home in Florida and I can't wait to see so many of you for long overdue visits and events. Have a safe and fun weekend!

With all that's happening this Congress, it is my greatest honor to represent you and hear from you about the issues that matter most. You can read below about what we've been up to this week, and as always, you can stay up to date with us here, on our website, and on XFacebookInstagram, and YouTube.

Partnering With Sen. Scott To Encourage Access To IVF Treatments

I joined Senator Rick Scott in introducing the Increasing Value for Families (IVF) with HSAs Act to help individuals and families better plan and pay for medical expenses, like in vitro fertilization (IVF).

For too many families, the high costs of IVF put it out of reach for many families. By decoupling Health Savings Accounts (HSA) from high-deductible health plans, and doubling the current contribution limits on HSAs from $4,300 to $8,600 for individuals and $8,550 to $17,100 for families, we're making it easier for young families to bring more children into their homes.

Prime Minister Netanyahu Speaks To Congress While Pro-Hamas Protesters Burned American Flags

Image

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Netanyahu addressed a joint session of Congress while 20,000+ pro-Hamas protestors descended on D.C. to burn and vandalize flags and property. It was a hell of a day.

REINS Amendment To Interior Appropriations Bill

Image

This week after our late vote series, I offered an amendment to restrict taxpayer funds to finalize any rule or regulation that will have an effect of $100M or more at the Department of the Interior. The amendment is modeled after my REINS Act, a bill I've championed for the last four years—and which was passed by the House twice in the last year and a half—to curb the regulatory overreach that's been running rampant in Washington for decades.

It passed by voice for the Interior appropriations bill we voted on this week.

Take a look at my remarks on the House Floor.

Holding Consumer Product Safety Commission Officials Accountable On Overspending

Image

During this week's Innovation, Data, and Commerce Subcommittee hearing, I asked leaders of the Consumer Product Safety Commission how agency officials mishandled instances of employees lying to the American people. The agency officials informed me that nobody had resigned or been fired, but that new training had been instituted.

In Washington, we say that people always "fail up" and even when they do something wrong in the overwhelming Washington bureaucracy, they always manage to wind up in positions with more authority. It's wrong and it shouldn't happen.

Chevron Deference Opinion Piece In The Washington Examiner

Image

"The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the 'Chevron deference,' which gave bureaucratic agencies enormous power to determine how to implement laws, has been widely celebrated by conservatives as a blow against federal regulatory overreach. But unless Congress reasserts its primacy in regulatory policy, the end of Chevron may simply shift the most important economic decisions from unelected bureaucrats to unelected judges," I write in a new Washington Examiner opinion piece.

My bill, the Regulations from the Executive In Need of Scrutiny Act (REINS) is pivotal to more permanently stop federal regulatory overreach that cripples all aspects of our lives.
