Honoring Americans Lost In 9/11 & Congress' Return To Session

Dear Neighbor,

Congress was back in session this week! After six weeks of August recess back home in the district, the House returned to session with a busy schedule.

I spent most of my days running from one committee hearing to another where I had the opportunity to advocate for the issues that matter most to our region in North Central Florida. I tackled issues including fairness for our citrus and dairy farmers, rural broadband accessibility, and patients with disabilities in need of organ transplants. Read below to find out more and watch the subcommittee hearing clips.

On Wednesday, we joined our neighbors across the country as we remembered and honored the Americans we lost on September 11, 2001. At the Capitol, I visited the Memorial to United Flight 93 just off the Capitol Rotunda to pay my respects. I also had the privilege of helping Young America's Foundation place flags on the Capitol Grounds as part of their 9/11 Never Forget Project. As we get farther away from this fateful day with each passing year, I pray that we continue to share the stories, memories, and feelings from that day with future generations.

On Thursday, we recognized our policewomen as part of National Police Woman Day. Thank you to the women who put on their uniforms every day and protect our communities. I am so appreciative for all that you do.

Finally, I joined Harris Faulkner on Fox News to talk about the migrant crisis taking over communities across the country. We discussed this issue and the importance of the SAVE Act, a bill passed by the House to ensure American elections are for American citizens only. Scroll down to watch our conversation!

The House returns next week for another full week in session. Stay tuned for more action from our nation's capital.

With all that's happening this Congress, it is my greatest honor to represent you and hear from you about the issues that matter most. You can read below about what we've been up to this week, and as always, you can stay up to date with us here, on our website, and on XFacebookInstagram, and YouTube.

For the Republic,

Remembering 9/11 & Those We Lost

Image

September 11, 2001 is a day we will never forget. Those we lost, the heroes, their families, and their stories will forever be remembered.

We pay tribute to the thousands of Americans who never made it home. This week is one of remembrance and solitude, ensuring future generations never forget what happened on that fateful day 23 years ago.

Placing Flags In Remembrance Of 9/11

Image

Wednesday morning I helped to lay flags at the U.S. Capitol in partnership with Young America's Foundation's 9/11 Never Forget Project. Students on college campuses nationwide are doing the same at their schools, reminding us all of the Americans we lost 23 years ago. We vow to never forget and remember the selflessness, compassion, and patriotism we all shared in the weeks, months, and years that followed.

Yesterday was National Police Woman Day! Thank you to all of the amazing female officers who work to defend our communities every day. We're grateful for all you do today and always!

Arbitrary Standards For Florida's Orange Growers

Image

This week, I asked the FDA about its arbitrary food standard for pasteurized orange juice created nearly 60 years ago. With changes to Florida's crops due to weather and disease, processors must blend in higher-sugar, foreign juices to meet requirements. We shouldn't force our producers to supplement their products with non-Florida oranges just to meet a standard the FDA hasn't reevaluated in decades.

BEAD Program Implementation Problems?

Image

On Tuesday, I spoke about the implementation of the BEAD program and some of the delays from NTIA that make it harder for communities across the country to get and stay connected with reliable internet access. For rural communities like ours in Florida's Third, swift work to make honest use of BEAD funds is an important part of the Energy & Commerce Committee's oversight.

Protecting Patients In Organ Transplant Systems

Image

During yesterday's Energy & Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight & Investigations, I discussed our organ transplant system and the individuals who are never allowed on the transplant list in the first place. Due to disabilities, for example, some Americans aren't even considered for vital organ transplants. Such was the case for Zion Sarmiento, an infant from our district, who was denied a heart transplant because he had Down syndrome.

Some transplant centers don't have non-discrimination policies as part of their standard operating procedures, including some where the committee's witnesses lead teams and work daily. I secured verbal commitments from them to codify their non-discrimination practices to make sure what happened to Baby Zion—and to others nationwide—doesn't continue.

On Thursday I joined Harris Faulkner to discuss the SAVE Act and its importance in ensuring American elections are for American citizens. We talked about empty assurances from the Left in saying non-citizens aren't voting in our elections. Take a look below.
