Week of September 16, 2024
REINing In Wasted Tax Dollars & Demanding A Safe Border

Dear Neighbor,

This week was the second in a three-week stretch before the October recess. It was an action-packed week, so take a look below to read all about the latest from D.C.

On Wednesday, Senator Rand Paul and I introduced the REINS Act with several important updates that protect Americans from the overwhelming federal bureaucracy. The original REINS Act passed the House last June. Click here to read more.

On the Floor this week, my colleagues on the Left prioritized illegal immigrants over our own American citizens. I am continuously disgusted by the border crisis, but this week 158 Members of Congress voted against the Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act. I went live on Facebook to share more about what the news didn't show. You can watch it below.

This week also marked several important celebrations and observances for our great country. This week we celebrated the birthday of the Constitution and Air Force, and the hard work of truck drivers everywhere that keep America running! Today, we honor National POW/MIA Recognition Day, and I pray for those we've lost and the families still searching for answers.

Finally, I encourage all students in the district to put their tech skills to the test in this year's Congressional App Challenge. Our winners last year designed an app that helps endangered species. I was so proud of them and am looking forward to seeing the creativity of this year's winner! Interested students can learn more below or call our Gainesville Office at (352) 505-0838 to learn more.

With all that's happening this Congress, it is my greatest honor to represent you and hear from you about the issues that matter most. You can read below about what we've been up to this week, and as always, you can stay up to date with us here, on our website, and on XFacebookInstagram, and YouTube.

For the Republic,

Introducing Updates To The REINS Act

Image

On Thursday I introduced new updates to the REINS Act, a bill I led and passed out of the House in June of last year. The REINS Act would return legislative power to Congress, check federal overreach, and ensure Americans have the tools needed to defend their rights. The REINS Act requires Congress to approve major federal agency rules and rules with an impact of $100M or more before they take effect. I am proud to work with my friend Senator Rand Paul on this effort!

The updates to the bill include:

- New defense for individuals: Individuals can argue that the average person would not have known their actions violated federal law if the statue did not clearly state it
- Right to sue: People can sue to stop the enforcement of a rule if an agency implements a rule without prior congressional approval
- LIBERTY Act: Agency guidance with an economic impact of $100M or more needs congressional approval just like major rules
- Deregulatory actions exempted: Agencies do not need congressional approval to withdraw costly or burdensome rules

This is great next step toward stopping the overwhelming bureaucracy from taking one more step toward our lives and businesses.

On Kamala Harris As Failed "Border Czar"

Image

Yesterday, I spoke on the House Floor and drew attention to the disgusting border crisis encouraging human trafficking, drug smuggling, crime, and more. Vice President Harris has enabled these crimes against women, children, and Americans. If we elect her as president this border crisis will continue to rage.

Florida Delegation Meets To Discuss Hurricane Preparedness

Image

This morning, I attended a meeting with my fellow Floridians and representatives from the State of Florida, NWS, and FEMA about hurricane season and storm recovery. We heard from Ken Graham, the Director of NOAA's National Weather Service and Robert Samaan, the Regional Administrator of FEMA.

As hurricane season continues into November, we must remain prepared for major weather events that are yet to head our way. As always, I remain committed to working with our federal and state partners to ensure our home is always prepared before, during, and after a storm.

Celebrating The Constitution

Image

Wednesday was Constitution Day! This week and every week, we're grateful for our nation's guiding document and the freedoms it enshrines for all Americans.

National POW/MIA Recognition Day

Image

On this National POW/MIA Recognition Day, we remember the prisoners of war and those missing in action that never made it home. We're indebted to them for their service and sacrifice in defense of our nation overseas.

Please join us in keeping them and their families in your prayers every day, but especially today.

The World's Greatest Air Force Turned 77

Image

Wishing a very happy birthday to the U.S. Air Force at 77 years young this year! We're grateful for the dedicated airmen and women who work hard to keep our nation safe. We also send a very special shoutout to our favorite Air Force veteran, Dave in our Gainesville District Office!

It's Truck Driver Appreciation Week

Image

It's National Truck Driver Appreciation Week and we're saluting all of Florida's amazing truck drivers who keep our state and our country running.

Did you know there are 453,060 trucking jobs in Florida and over 125,000 trucking companies (mostly small businesses) serving the state? And that Florida's truckers transport over 470,000 tons of goods per day? These hardworking men and women drive with purpose every day, and we couldn't be more grateful.
