Beginning Recovery From Hurricane Helene

Dear Neighbor,

Hurricane Helene certainly wrought havoc on Florida's Third Congressional District last night and early this morning. This morning we've been on the phone with our local, state, and federal partners working to get out into our communities to survey the damage and begin the cleanup process. Later today and into the weekend, we'll be out and about in our hardest-hit communities in Dixie, Levy, and Suwannee Counties.

FDOT, FHP, Florida National Guard, and local law enforcement agencies are working diligently to clear roads so utility crews can get out to restore power as it's safe to do so. If you don't have to be on the roads today, please stay home to allow our first responders, emergency crews, and linemen the opportunity to get to work. Florida is blessed to have numerous resources to deploy in the aftermath of this storm.

Our office is standing by to assist as the process begins in earnest. If we can help you identify resources or expedite your federal disaster claims, please reach out. We're available via email at kcammack.hurricane@mail.house.gov and via phone at (352) 505-0838. Take a look below for more information on how to document property damage and begin the claims process.

As the initial damage assessments begin, we're awaiting new disaster codes from FEMA, SBA, and USDA. As that information becomes available, we'll be sure to share it on our website and social media pages to assist with federal claims. Additionally, Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) are in the process of coming online and as soon as the locations for these centers are available, we'll publish them. Representatives from our office, FEMA, SBA, USDA, Florida Farm Bureau, and others will be on hand to answer questions and file claims.

We hope you, your family, and your business stayed safe, but if not, please know our team is ready to do everything we can to help you recover. Reach out to us anytime.

For the Republic,

Requesting Full Category B Assistance Before Hurricane Helene

Image

Wednesday afternoon, I sent a letter to President Biden requesting full Category B Assistance for Alachua, Columbia, and Marion Counties.

We're continuing to follow the emergency declarations from the state and will make sure they reach the President's desk as full support rolls out over the next several days.

Earlier this week, I met with National Weather Service Director, Ken Graham. He and his team were instrumental in helping Florida prepare for Helene.

Celebrating Charlotte Woodward & Protecting People With Disabilities

Image

We are beyond thrilled to announce that the Charlotte Woodward Organ Transplant Discrimination Prevention Act PASSED the House this week!

The bill is named after Charlotte Woodward, an adult woman with Down syndrome who received a lifesaving heart transplant over 12 years ago. My introduction of the bill was inspired by Baby Zion Sarmiento from Ocala, Florida, who was born with Down syndrome and a heart defect in June 2021. Following 40 days in the NICU and five open-heart surgeries, Zion passed away after being denied a heart transplant because of his disability.

This is just the next step toward ensuring that all Americans—regardless of disability—have the same access to lifesaving care, such as organ transplants. One family's sorrowful story has turned to triumph and we won't stop fighting until this bill is signed into law.
