Week of April 28, 2025
  Promises Made, Promises Kept

Dear Neighbor,

This week marked 100 days of President Trump's second term! From securing our southern border and removing dangerous criminals from our country to strengthening our economy and protecting girls' and women's sports, we're proud to see our nation trending in the right direction. We celebrated the president's first 100 days with highlights on social media—keep reading below for more!

In the Energy & Commerce Committee, our Charlotte Woodward Organ Transplant Discrimination Prevention Act passed out of committee on its way to consideration before the whole House of Representatives. You can read more about the bill below and check out highlights from the hearing after a long day in the full committee markup session.

We also had several groups in town from Florida's Third, including representatives from some of Florida's rural electric co-ops. It was great to see some friendly faces and to welcome them to D.C. during a busy week. You can also check out some visits from last week's district meetings and visits, including meetings with veterans in Marion County, linemen from Clay Electric, and UF leaders working in cybersecurity.

As a reminder, our spring Service Academy Day will be on Saturday, May 17 from 9am-12pm at Buchholtz High School in Gainesville. Hear from representatives from each of our nation's service academies and learn more about our office's role in nominating young public servants for our prestigious military programs. With questions, please contact us in Gainesville at (352) 505-0838.

Finally, today marks the last opportunity to vote for your favorite high school art piece for this year's Congressional Art Competition. Read more below and head to our Facebook page to vote for your favorite piece.

Next week is the second of four weeks the House is in session. Budget reconciliation remains the big focus for the House ahead of Memorial Day, so stay tuned as we share more details here and on our social media pages as this process continues.

With all that's happening this new Congress, it is my greatest honor to represent you and hear from you about the issues that matter most. You can read below about what we've been up to this week, and as always, you can stay up to date with us here, on our website, and on XFacebookInstagram, and YouTube.

For the Republic,

Trump's First 100 Days

Image

On Tuesday we celebrated President Trump’s first 100 days in office!

The President has consistently delivered for the American people, from closing our southern border, onshoring domestic production, launching the largest deportation operation in U.S. history, and demolishing the foreign drug cartels, to expanding oil and natural gas, ending the natural gas export ban, stopping overreaching electric vehicle mandates, removing woke DEI policies from our military, and protecting women and girls’ sports. This administration keeps winning and won't let up anytime soon.

This is what "promises made, promises kept" looks like. Thank you, President Trump!

NRECA Visits Washington

Image

Great to see folks from Florida's Electric Co-Ops in town this week! We had representatives from Central Florida Electric Co-Op, Clay Electric, Suwannee Valley Electric Co-Op, SECO Energy, and others who serve our district and the surrounding area. The group was in town as part of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association's (NRECA) annual legislative conference where co-op leaders from around the country visit Washington, D.C. to meet with their congressional delegations to discuss issues facing the industry.

Thank you for visiting and for bringing a slice of Florida to Washington this week!

Charlotte Woodward Organ Transplant Discrimination Prevention Act Passes Through Committee

Image

On Tuesday, the Energy & Commerce Committee marked up our bill, the Charlotte Woodward Organ Transplant Discrimination Prevention Act. Passed last Congress by the House, the bill ensures that individuals with disabilities, including Down syndrome, do not face discrimination in lifesaving medical care, including in organ transplants.

This issue is one important to my heart, as Baby Zion Sarmiento of Ocala, faced the same discrimination this bill aims to prevent just a few years ago. The next stop for this bill: the entire House of Representatives!

Stay tuned for more updates as this bill progresses through the House and Senate!

Farewell, D.C. Interns!

Image

Today we bid farewell to our D.C. spring interns (from L to R: Judy, Bella, and Ethan)! For the last four months, they have been working with Team Kat to support all aspects of our office's operations, from giving tours and answering phones to assisting with special projects and attending legislative hearings and markups.

We'll miss them tremendously and wish them the best as they finish graduate and undergraduate school at Georgetown, UF, and the Citadel, respectively.

Meeting Veterans In Marion County

Image

I had great meetings with veterans' groups in Marion County, including the Marion County Veterans Advisory Council, the On Top of the World Veterans Club, the Veteran's Resource Center, and Marion County Veterans Services. I always appreciate the opportunity to engage with our heroes and discuss the most important issues they've been addressing in our communities.

Thank you for all you have done to serve our country and all you continue to do in service to our heroes.

Clay Electric Linemen Appreciation Breakfast

Image

I joined Clay Electric Co-Op linemen in Columbia County at a recent breakfast! It was great to thank the hardworking team members who work around the clock to power our homes and businesses and help our communities recover after hurricanes and natural disasters.

Thank you for all of your incredible work—we appreciate everything you do to keep Florida powered!

Leaders Against Non-Consensual Imagery

Image

We met with leaders from the University of Florida and the Florida Institute for Cybersecurity Research for a roundtable discussion about the proliferation of non-consensual imagery on the internet. Over the last several years, we've seen non-consensual images, particularly of minors, appear across the internet with little protection for those depicted or recourse for the perpetrators, especially amid the growth of artificial intelligence (AI).

As a member of the Energy & Commerce Committee, this issue is a big one for me and our team, and for the committee as a whole. Understanding how these images come to be and what their effects are on the mental health of children, teens, and adults is paramount to putting an end to this dangerous trend. I'm proud to have supported my colleagues' and First Lady Melania Trump's efforts in the TAKE IT DOWN Act, a bill that seeks to stop and remove non-consensual images and spread awareness of the dangers.

Thank you to these leaders for the work they do in research and prevention.
