Remembering My Friend Congressman John Lewis

I am so brokenhearted at the passing of my dear and beloved friend Congressman John Lewis, a man of great courage and extraordinary love for us all. An American hero, John took his fight for justice and equality for all from the depths of Bloody Sunday to the halls of Congress and made our world a better place through his noble and unyielding service. I truly thank God for sending John Lewis our way, and I am praying for his family, friends, staff and constituents.

Honoring Thirteenth District Students with CBC Scholarships for College

Earlier this week I presented Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Spouses Education Scholarships to four exceptional college students from Georgia’s Thirteenth District. Since 2003, my wife Alfredia and I have awarded $203,400 in CBC scholarships to 111 Thirteenth District students.  Each of this year’s Thirteenth District scholarship recipients received a $2,050 award. Students honored include:

Ms. Jorryn Bellinger, South Fulton resident and student at Agnes Scott College
Mr. Jayden Braxton, Douglasville resident and student at University of Georgia
Ms. Kelli Crews, Stockbridge resident and student at University of Georgia
Ms. Jessica-Alexis Okafor, Douglasville resident and student at Stanford University

Recognizing July 2020 as Fibroids Awareness Month

Thousands of women in Georgia and millions more across the country are affected by uterine fibroids, which represent one of the most prevalent reproductive health problems in the United States today. In fact, by age 50, roughly 70% of White women and 80% of Black women will be diagnosed with uterine fibroids. That's why I have introduced H.Res. 1040, a resolution recognizing July 2020 as Uterine Fibroid Awareness Month. Increasing awareness about uterine fibroids is critical to addressing the national maternal mortality crisis and prevalence of pregnancy-related deaths.

$163,294 FEMA Grant Awarded to Cobb County Fire Department

Firefighters place themselves in harm’s way every day for the communities they serve, and even more so now as they respond to the obstacles caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. On Wednesday, I was proud to announce that FEMA has awarded a $163,294 grant to the Cobb County Fire Department through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant – COVID-19 Supplemental Program (AFG-S) for the purchase of personal protective equipment (PPE) and related supplies.

Strengthening SNAP & Fighting Hunger During COVID-19 Pandemic

I also recently joined 160 members of Congress in a letter urging congressional leadership to address rising food insecurity and unprecedented demand at food banks by strengthening the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). With families across Georgia  overwhelmed by record job losses, health strains and rising grocery costs during this pandemic, congressional leaders must not delay and should act swiftly to boost the SNAP program to provide families with the nutritional support they need to put food on their tables.

Prioritizing Our Frontline Workers

On Tuesday, I participated in the House Financial Services Committee's virtual hearing  on "Promoting Economic Recovery: Examining Capital Markets and Worker Protections in the COVID-19 Era." During the hearing, I raised concerns with the wealth and income disparities that have deepened during the COVID-19 crisis. While some companies are able to offer telecommuting opportunities to keep their employees safe and their productivity high, frontline workers are more likely to experience job interruptions, health risks, and economic loss.  We must have a national economic recovery plan that includes strategies to narrow the wealth gap and prioritize economic growth for frontline workers.
