Remembering Laken Riley

Today marks what would have been Laken Riley’s 23rd birthday. She should be here, celebrating this milestone surrounded by the love of her family and friends. Instead, today is a day of heartbreaking loss. For the past four years, the Biden-Harris Administration has failed to fulfill its duty to protect our country—neglecting to secure the border and allowing criminals to invade our communities.

Had our immigration laws been properly enforced, and had the individual responsible for taking Laken’s life been held accountable for his numerous crimes, Laken would still be here with us today. It is now our responsibility to ensure that no other family has to endure the same unimaginable pain.

This week, the House passed H.R. 29, the Laken Riley Act, a crucial piece of legislation that mandates the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to detain illegal immigrants arrested for crimes such as burglary, theft, larceny, and shoplifting. Despite overwhelming support, 159 of my Democrat colleagues voted against this commonsense measure.

I am hopeful that the Senate will swiftly pass this bill, and that President Trump will sign it into law following his inauguration. Let this be the first step in ensuring that no one else suffers a loss like Laken’s.

Do you support the Laken Riley Act, which mandates the detention of non-U.S. nationals charged with crimes?
